youth cafe appeal

The young people of Portlaoise’s new Youth Cafe have some equipment but we could do with a lot more! And it doesn’t have to be brand spanking new. Maybe you have something @ home that you don’t use any more?! We would love some Cd’s, DVDs and computer games for PS3, Xbox, Wii for Under 18s!, Any working music equipment or anything else that you think we might like & use in the Youth Cafe! We know the people of Laois are very generous so thank you in advance. Also, a huge thank you to those of you who have already generously donated to us. parish lotto

Congratulations to Patricia Leahy, who was a €20,000 jackpot winner of the Portlaoise Parish Lotto when the numbers were drawn on Thursday, March 14. The promoter of the winning ticket was Lil Gleeson. Numbers drawn were: 08, 09, 19, and 30. Next week’s jackpot is €12,000.

Daffodill day coffee morning

A Daffodill day coffee morning in aid of the Irish Cancer Society will take place on Wednesday March 20 in the Portlaoise Parish Centre at 10.30am. Volunteers are needed and those interested in helping can call 087 6368148.

50+ Active Age Group

On March 20 there will be dancing. On March 27 there will be a sports day. Bealtaine festival rehearsals take place every Wednesday at 5pm in the Portlaoise Parish Centre. New members always welcome, come along or contact Andy at 057 86 21571.

Macra table quiz

The annual quiz will be held on March 22 in the Rock Inn in Portlaoise. The quiz is always a fun night out and kicks off at 9pm. Tables of four are €20. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

County Swimming finals are to be held in Portlaoise Leisure centre on Saturday, March 30 at 10 am sharp. Register before handwith cordinators. There is a €3 charge per swimmer

The Gathering

Launch of Ireland Reaching Out in County Laois– Thursday, April 4t at 8pm, Parish Centre, Portlaoise In the year of The Gathering 2013, Ireland Reaching Out is an initiative to trace and encourage the descendants of those who left your parishes to return from around the world. Anyone with an interest in their community, local history, heritage, tourism or genealogy is invited to get involved and learn more about the programme which will be launched by Henry Healy, Ireland XO.

PASS party

A PASS party sponsored by the Mental Health Association will take place in the Centre on New Road, Portlaoise, on Thursday March 21 from 6.30pm.


Portlaoise Guild will provide supper for the Laois Federation ICA Choir “Musical Melodies” at St Peters Church, Portlaoise on April 26 at 8pm. Tickets €10 each. Our guild are looking forward to going to the Theatre in Dublin to see a show and dinner afterwards on April 13. Bus leaves Sue Ryder at 11.30am.

Library News

Portlaoise Library Staff would like to say a huge “Thank You”, to all the following people, Gabrielle Lynam School of Dancing Portlaoise Muinteoir Dominic and the pupils of Gael Scoil Phortlaoise P.J.Phelan, Family and Musicians Comhaltas Ceoltoiri, Portlaoise. Ciorcál Comhrá Members, Portlaoise Library Who participated in our recent event for Seachtain na Gaeilge and all who contributed to it, and making the evening a wonderful celebration of Irish music, song dance and poetry.


The Portlaoise Lions Club would like to express their sincere thanks to all the patrons who attended the very successful charity Spring Serenade concert in aid of the Portlaoise Lions Club, the Arch Club and the Cuisle Centre on Sunday March 10. A large crowd attended the concert which saw the Portlaoise Singers along with a number of well known musicians and singers perform.

Equestrian reunion

Condolences to the family of the late Daniel ‘Dan’ Dunne of St Judes, Ballyfin Rd, Portlaoise, who died on March 14 peacefully in the loving care of the staff of St. Vincents Hospital, Mountmellick, Daniel (Dan). Beloved husband of Maureen, and dearly loved dad to Betty, Donal, Marie, Patricia and Gus he is deeply regretted relatives and friends. Reposed at his family residence, with Requiem Mass at SS Peter and Paul’s Church with interment afterwards in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery.


Condolences to the family of the late Brendan Fitzsimons of Portlaoise who passed away on March 13. Beloved husband of Marjorie and much loved father of Bernadett, Una, Brendan, John and Ciaran also deeply extended family, relatives and friends. Reposed at the Chapel of Rest at the Regional Hospital Portlaoise with removal to SS Peter & Paul’s Church for requiem mass. Burial afterwards in SS Peter & Paul’s Cemetery.


Condolences to the family of the late Margaret (Peggy) Barry, (née Ryan) of St Jude’s, St John’s Sq and formerly Abbeyleix Rd., Portlaoise who passed away on March 11. Wife of the late Ted, she is deeply regretted by her brothers, sisters, extended family, relatives and friends. Reposed at the chapel of rest at the Regional Hospital Portlaoise with removal at 6pm to SS Peter & Paul’s Church for requiem mass. Cremation to take place later at Newland’s Cross Crematorium.

Husband of the late Rose, and father to PJ, Patricia and Michelle. Reposed at the Chapel of Rest, Regional Hospital Portlaoise with removal to SS Peter and Paul’s Church for 12.30 mass. Interment afterwards in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery.


Condolences to the family of the late Eugene Houlihan of Ballymun, Dublin and late of Portlaoise and Collier Transport who died on March 12 peacefully at home. Sadly missed by his loving partner Margaret, sons, daughter, extended family, neighbours and friends. Reposed at his home with removal to St. Joseph’s Church, Balcurris for Funeral Mass followed by Cremation at Glasnevin Crematorium.


Condolences to the family of the late Teresa Blanche (nee Nealon) of the The Downs, Portlaoise and formerly of Dublin who passed away on March 10. Beloved wife of the late Joe and dear mother of Pauline and Linda, she is also deeply regretted by sister Rosaleen Rice (Dublin), extended family, relatives and many friends. Reposed in her home from with removal to SS Peter and Paul’s Church, Portlaoise for Requiem Mass with cremation service afterwards in Glasnevin Crematorium.
