Christmas lights

Downtown Portlaoise are a small group of business owners in Portlaoise who take on the major task of paying and organising the Christmas lights for Portlaoise. This is a major undertaking for businesses in Portlaoise who are busy trying to keep their businesses afloat. We would like to appeal to the people of Portlaoise to give what they can towards the lights, as they benefit everybody in the community. The flag day is Friday, October 18. Please give what you can.


Best of luck to the senior footballers of Portlaoise GAA who take on Arles-Killeen in their bid to make it an historic 7-Up of wins in the county championship at O’Moore Park next Sunday, October 20. C’mon the Town.

New Macra Members

Portlaoise Macra would like to welcome the new members who came to the bowling night on Saturday as part of Macra’s national recruitment fortnight. There’s lots of events coming up with public speaking, bowling and welding competitions being held in the next few weeks and the annual rally taking place on the October bank holiday weekend in Carlow. Daredevils foroige

The AGM of Daredevils Foroige took place on Friday, October 4, in the Macra Hall, Portlaoise. Those elected on to the committee were chairperson Haley Dunne, secretary Megan Boyce, treasurer Shaunagh Dunne and PRO Jennifer O Neill. The new committee would like to thank last year’s officers for all their hard work and are looking foward to another great year ahead.

Cabaret & Dancing

A night of cabaret and dancing takes place on Friday, October 18, at the Portlaoise senior citizens Christmas party at the Portlaoise Heritage Hotel starting at 9.30pm. Admission €5. Music by The Statesme Band, Har Rambsbottom, Ray Scanlon, Thomas Lacey and Tommy Hyland.


Portlaoise ICA wish to welcome all new members: Mary, Aishling, Mary, Denise, Angela, Jemeel. Meeting next month, November 13. Hostesses for next month are Margaret and Kelly-Anne. Competition for next month decorate wooden spoon (standard size). Competition winners for photos of autumn scene: 1st place Beatrice 2nd place Stella 3rd place Frances.

talks about Laois

Dr Jack Carter will give a talk on the built and natural heritage of Laois and the evictions at Luggacurren at the Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise, on Thursday, 17 October, at 8pm. This is part of the Autumn programme of talks organised by Laois Heritage Society. Dr Carter is a well-known historian and author. All are welcome and admission is free.

Youth cafe

6th Class Club at the Portlaoise Youth Café every Thursday after school from 4 - 6pm, for all 10-12 year old primary school students. Fully supervised by volunteers trained in child protection and garda vetted. Admission €1 and a parental consent form must be completed. Parish Lotto

There was no winner of the Portlaoise Parish lotto jackpot when numbers were drawn on October 10. Numbers 01,17,25,31. The 9 match winners won €112 each. This week’s jackpot is €20,000.

Condolences to the family of the late Margaret (Pearl) WALSH (née Dempsey) of the Ridge Road who died on Saturday October 5. Late Brendan Bowe

Condolences to the family of the late Brendan Bowe of 77 Marian Place who died on Saturday, October 5 suddenly. Beloved husband of Eilish and much loved father of Shane and Gary he is deeply regretted by extended family, relatives and friends. Reposed at his home with removal SS Peter and Paul’s Church for requiem mass. Burial afterwards in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery.

Late Sarah Murphy

Condolences to the family of the late Sarah (Ciss) Murphy (née Coss) of New Row, Green Rd, who died peacefully at Tullamore Regional Hosp on Wednesday, October 9.
