Chief superintendent John Scanlan refused to give an answer to Stradbally Neighbourhood Watch on whether gardai from other areas in Laois are called into the prisons.

“I will talk to you seperately on specific issues”, he told Carmel Delaney and Dominic Hartnett from Stradbally Neighbourhood Watch at last week’s Laois County Joint Policing meeting.

“I have no sense of the community losing respect. I will not discuss this in a public forum as this is to do with security of state and the prison”.

He was responding to a question from the neighbourhood watch which stated that from time to time Gardai from outside Portlaoise have been called in from their own rota to supplement the Portlaoise rota, and asked could this be stopped.
