OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE CLUBHOUSE

Newly installed president of the GAA Mr Liam O’Neill will be guest of honour at the official opening of the new Mountmellick GAA clubhouse on Friday May 11. The opening will mark another milestone in the history of Mountmellick GAA Club and it completes another phase in the on-going development in the Acragar complex.  The development now includes, in addition to the clubhouse, two full sized pitches, a hurling wall, parking area and spectator viewing areas. 

The official opening ceremony will be performed by Mr O’Neill at 7pm and will be followed by a senior football game between Laois and Offaly, a meeting that’s always guaranteed, because of their traditional rivalry, to bring the best out of the players on both sides.

RACE NIGHT

Mountmellick United FC is holding a race night in The Mellick Inn on Friday May 11. Please come along for a great evening of entertainment. Thanks for your support. TODDLER GROUP

All parents, guardians, grandparents and child minders are invited to join Mountmellick parent/guardian toddler group on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to noon in the Methodist church hall. Why not come along and enjoy a chat and a cuppa while your child plays with children of a similar age. Children up to age 5 years welcome.

We are holding an open day on Tuesday May 15 at 10am, all are welcome along.

The toddle waddle will be held at 10am on Thursday May 10.

MOUNTMELLICK & DISTRICT GAME PRESERVATION ASSOCIATION & GUN CLUB

A meeting for new members of the above will be held in the town hall on Thursday May 24 at 8.30pm. New members must attend. Please contact any member of the committee or come along on the night.

COMMUNITY GAMES

Mountmellick area community area track and field competition will take place in Smith’s field on Wednesday May 23 at 7pm. Competition age groups go from U8 to U16 and you must be under a given age on July 31, 2012. For further details contact 086 3932756.

CASTLEBRACK CEMETERY

The rosary will be recited in the cemetery at 7pm every Sunday evening during May.

The rosary will be recited in the presence of the blessed sacrament at 7pm each Sunday during May. All welcome

Applications will be taken in the convent extensions on Sunday May 12 following noon mass.

ROSENALLIS ATHLETICS CLUB

Rosenallis athletics training continues every Thursday from 7pm to 8pm in Johnsgrove Rosenallis.

The Irish Heart Foundation’s happy heart weekend is this weekend May 10 to 13. Please support.

ROCK GAA

Coaching for Gaelic football for girls and boys U8, U10, U12 and U14 continues at the Rock on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm. All teams are up and running at this stage but new players are welcome and can register on Tuesdays or Thursdays, or alternatively contact the club’s juvenile secretary John Allen at 086 3264102 for more details.

MOUNTMELLICK GAA

U6 and U8 hurling training continues in Acragar every Monday at 6.30pm. U10 and U12 follows at 7pm, new players welcome. U6 and U8 football training is at 6pm on Thursdays.U14 football training continues at 5pm on Saturdays in Acragar.

SARSFIELDS

Training for all U10 and U12 continues on Mondays at 6pm in Acragar. New members are very welcome. Further up the age groups club training continues from 16 upwards on Tuesday and Fridays.

LAOIS MARTIAL ART

Kickboxing and taekwondo classes for all ages from 4yrs upwards are held on Monday, Tuesday and Friday in Mountmellick and Portlaoise. Facilities include punch bags and a boxing ring. Classes are taught by a 4th degree Irish national coach. For details contact 087 2768843.

PILGRIMAGES

The parish pilgrimage to Lourdes is from July 17 to 24 staying at the Solitude Hotel costing €770 per person sharing. Names and deposits required now, contact Eleanor at 087 7670915 or 057 8624216.

Some seats still remain on both pilgrimages.

LIBRARY

Story time and colouring for 4 to7 year olds with Sharon McEvoy is on Thursday May 10 from 4pm to 5pm.

An exhibition by local photographer, Aisling Weir entitled ‘Be Your own Art’ will feature in the library gallery for the month of May. All are welcome. Aisling will host a photography workshop on Tuesday May 15 from 10.30am to noon. Booking is essential as places are limited. Contact 057 8644572 for further details

Our knitting circle meets each Tuesday morning from 10.30am to noon. Bring along your knitting needles and join us for a cuppa and a chat.

As part of the Bealtaine festival, a coffee morning and a documentary screening of ‘Mitchell and Kenyon in Ireland’ will be held on Thursday May 10 at 10.30am.

SET DANCING

Classes continue each Monday in the community centre in Ballyfin. They move to Tuesday on bank holidays.

FATHER AND CHILD DAY

Laois County Childcare Committee will hold its annual father and child activity day in Portlaoise leisure centre on Saturday May 12. The event is free for everybody to attend and will include games with Laois Sports Partnership and Laois GAA, as well as music and dance with the Happy Hearts Club. There will also be Buntus Start games for the under sixes. It will be rounded off with a picnic. The event starts at 11am and runs until 2 pm. All are welcome. Please bring appropriate clothing in the event of inclement weather.

ACTIVE RETIREMENT

As the festival of Bealtaine and Active Ageing is celebrated in the month of May we have some interesting days planned this month. 

On Thursday May 10 we are invited to a coffee morning in the Library where a wonderful old documentary film will be shown.  

On Wednesday May 16 we have a choice of venues, our next group meeting in the Museum at 10.30am where a very interesting morning has been planned or an activity day from 10am to 2pm in St Mary’s sports hall Portlaoise which has been organised by Laois Sports Partnership. Please notify a member of the committee if you want a place on the bus which will leave the MDA at 9.30am and will return at 2.30pm.

On Wednesday May 23 from 11am to 4pm we will be in the Bloomfield Hotel in Mullingar at the ARI Midland Region Celebration of EYAASBG. There will be demonstrations and exhibition of art and crafts in the morning. Lunch is at 1pm and dancing and/or sport and Boccia from 2pm to 4pm. Please pay the €10 for the day (including lunch) and the €10 for the bus (total €20) as soon as possible. The bus to this will leave the MDA at 9.45am and will be back in Mountmellick at 5pm approx.  

On Monday May 28 our own Bealtaine tea dance will be held in the Macra hall from 2pm to 4.30pm with free admission. All are welcome.

The weekly activities will also continue with dancing in Wolfe Tone Court on Mondays from 3pm to 4.30pm and Boccia in the Macra Hall at 7.30pm.

Aqua Aerobics are held in Portlaoise leisure centre at noon on Tuesdays with the free bus leaving the MDA at 11.15am. Music and song is enjoyed in St Vincent’s Hospital on Wednesdays from 6.15pm to 7.45pm. The art class will continue until Thursday May 10.

Please note that there are only a few places left on the free computer course for our ARA being run on Fridays June 1, 8 and 15 in the MDA.
