Laois Connects

Paul Gilligan, CEO of St Patrick’s Mental Health Services in Dublin will deliver a free public talk as part of Laois Connects Mental Health week in the Orchard Hotel, Portarlington in partnership with Portarlington MHA and Laois Sports Partnership on Monday, October 6 at 7.30pm.

This talk will provide information and advice that enable parents, teachers, and childcare providers to interact with children in emotionally healthy ways.

Port Project Suicide Awareness Prevention Campaign launch of Help is there DVD takes place on Thursday, October 9 at 7pm. Contact David Molloy on 0860423547. All welcome to this free event.

AGM

Presentation Primary School Parents Council will hold their AGM on Monday October 6 at 8pm. All parents are very welcome to attend.

Who Cares for the Carer?

A seminar promoting self-care for family carers will take place on Wednesday Oct 1 from 10am to 4pm in Portlaoise Parish Centre. Guest speakers will talk on topics including entitlements and services for carers, personal journeys of carers and mindfulness. Admission is free and all are welcome. Jigs & Reels

This year’s event takes place once again in the Heritage Hotel Killenard on bank holiday weekend Sunday October 26 at 8pm. Tickets €20 on sale from this Thursday October 2. You can get them from the dancers or call into our new PCDA office in the Community Centre and the girls will have them on sale.

This year all proceeds go to the Portarlington Community Development Assoc (PCDA). All the dancers will receive €200 per couple for their favorite charity or club. The winning group will receive €1,000 for their charity/club.

Speech & Drama

Golf Classic

Golf Classic takes place in Portarlington Golf Club on Friday October 3 for the Kaelem Hainsworth Memorial trophy in aid of the Mater Heart House fighting SADA by screening. Team of four any combination €200. BBQ on the 10th hole, prize giving, food, entertainment and auction later in the evening. Who wants to be a Thousandaire

O’Dempsey’s GFC is bringing the thrilling nationwide game show, ‘Who wants to be a Thousandaire’ to The Heritage Hotel on Saturday October 4. Contestants are drawn from ticket sales and each contestant will play for a chance to win a €1,000.

Tickets for the show priced at €15 (family of 4 €50), are available from committee members. A great night’s entertainment is guaranteed with a disco afterwards. Not to be missed.

Sympathy

Another of our older and highly respected gentleman passed away on September 19 at his residence in Bracklone St. Tom Downey who was a retired former long time worker in Odlums Mill was predeceased by his loving wife Annie a number of years ago. He will be sadly missed by his daughters Annette and Marie, his brothers Paddy and Billy, sons-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, neighbours and friends. Requiem mass took place on Wednesday September 25 in St Michael’s Church with burial after in St Michael’s Cemetery. May Tom’s gentle soul rest in peace.

Sympathy

Deepest sympathy to the family of Patrick Wyse Orchard Drive and formerly Bandon Co. Cork who passed away on September 16 at the Regional Hospital Tullamore.

Patrick was predeceased by his loving wife Martha Frances only six months ago. He will be sadly missed by his loving family, Madeline, Frank, Colette, Dorothy, Michael, Dermot, Angela and Mark, grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughters in law, relatives and friends.

Requiem mass took place on Sunday September 21 in St Michael’s Church with burial after in St Michael’s Cemetery. May Patrick rest in peace.
