On Friday December 12 at 8pm in Mountmellick Balcony Theatre, Shay Flannery will take to the stage with ‘Confessions of an Auld Reprobate’. St Joseph’s Sunday Choir will launch their new CD in the Arts Centre on Thursday December 11 at 8pm. The CD costs €10 with all profits going to the Cuisle Centre for cancer support in Portlaoise. There are 12 hymns on the CD. It would make an ideal Christmas present. All are welcome to the launch, performed by Mountmellick’s Mezzo soprano Imelda Drumm.


The Rock NS parents council are hosting a disco for primary school children in the Rock GAA club house on Friday December 12 from 7pm to 9pm. Admission €3 per child. Spot prizes on the night.


The much awaited Christmas Fair will be held in O’Connell Square on Sunday December 14 with stalls and activities to suit all tastes. Come along and enjoy the festive cheer.

Santy is coming to the Community Arts Centre on Sunday December 21 at 3pm, with a present for each boy and girl. Tickets will be distributed to schools shortly. If lost come along any way, no child will be left out.

The children’s sewing group for ages 10 to 12 will meet again on Tuesday December 9 from 4pm to 5pm. The project for the day is making Christmas stockings.


Artist Tom Joyce’s exhibition titled ‘Expressions’ will run in the gallery for the month of December. The exhibition includes oil paintings and sculptures of particular personal significance to the artist. He will give a talk on his latest exhibition on Tuesday December 16 at 6.30pm. Friday December 19: Christmas coffee morning from 10am to 11.30am. Join us for a cuppa and some mince pies. Saturday December 20: Christmas paper crafts (make an origami Santa bookmark, turkey place cards and some more paper surprises). Just drop into the library anytime between 10.30am to 1pm. No booking necessary.


The library knitting/crochet group meets each Tuesday from 10.30am to 12.30pm. Bring along your needles and wool for a cuppa and a chat.

Mountmellick Comhaltas annual Christmas party will take place on Tuesday December 16 in the Forum Hostel, Mountmellick. This is a new venue for us and is not far from the Macra Hall. The night will be in Seisiun form, which like our monthly Seisiun will be a free event though we do ask parents to bring something for the refreshments on the night. Upcoming events are the busking on Saturday afternoon December 13 in The Kyle Centre, this is a fundraiser


The group hosted the Slieve Bloom County Cub Challenge on Sunday November 23 in Garryhinch Woods, 160 cubs representing Rathdowney, Durrow, Mountrath, Kilcormac, Tullamore, Mountmellick, Camross and Portlaoise were tested in first aid, orienteering, backwoods cooking, pioneering, water safety, camping and a quiz, an obstacle course was included as a fun activity. Congratulations to Mountrath cubs who won first prize, Rathdowney came in second and Camross third place. Mountrath will represent the SB county at Castle Saunderson International Scout Campsite in March 2015. Thanks to the leaders, scouts and ventures who helped to run the bases on the day along with leaders, ventures and rover scouts from Camross, Durrow and Portlaoise. Thanks to Adrian Fitzpatrick of Enviraloo who provided toilet facilities.


The group are launching their first ever calendar in the Druid at 8 pm on Wednesday December 10 depicting scouting from the 1940s to present day, past leaders and scouts are featured in the calendar, come along to see if you or yours may be on a page and enjoy a cheese and wine reception.
