SCORING an impressive 275 points, up five points from last year, the village of Borris-in-Ossory was described as sporting a very attractive centre, with the courthouse and the Church of Ireland structure dominating.
A number of other high quality buildings were observed such as the period dwelling adjacent to Geoghegan’s with its attractive sliding sash windows. The judges were struck by the high standard of presentation achieved by the commercial premises in the village, although a number of vacant properties were spotted that were in poor condition.
The committee were commended on the landscaping projects on view. The raised natural stone landscaping beds around the courthouse and the landscaped beds around the church were very carefully maintained. The landscaping on the approach road from Limerick also looked very well, with its attractive and well maintained natural stone beds. The work of the committee on the school and the church car park was also observed and admired during adjudication.
The hard work undertaken during the daily litter pick by volunteers was remarked upon, although while the standard of litter control was generally good litter was spotted on approach roads. Judges were heartened to see that cables have been put underground and that signs in the village have also been improved since last year.
Continued improvements are possible with the council water services structure opposite the Glenaul estate untidy needing paint and maintenance.
The signs in the town are generally in good condition, but in some instances sign poles need painting. The area behind the hotel was very untidy due to poor surfacing and weedy verges and regrettably, an area between the space building and the bottle bank had been used for dumping purposes.
The presentation of residential areas was generally good. Ossory Court is a modern estate with most houses of a good standard and a well maintained green area. The Slieve Bloom estate and Mountain View were also quite attractive.
In conclusion, the judges said they were impressed with the continued improvements in Borris in Ossory and they look forward to the many exciting projects planned in the years ahead.
