HOSPITAL FUNDRAISER

A fundraiser in aid of St Vincent’s Hospital is being held on Friday February 20 at 9pm in The Heritage Hotel Portlaoise with music by Shawn Cuddy and his band. Tickets at €15 available from Jackie 087 2770625. A fun night out with music and raffles, all for a good cause. Support appreciated.

SOCIAL

The Community Care monthly social is on Thursday February 19 at 8.30pm in Wolfe Tone Court. The group would welcome more people to join them for music and light refreshments. Those in the Mountmellick area only who require transport call 087 9812525.

MOUNTMELLICK GAA

Our awards night for the U21A Footballers, Minor A hurlers and Division 3 hurlers will be held on Friday February 28 in The Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise. We will be holding this in conjunction with Ballyfin GAA. Tickets cost €35.

Membership for the year is now due. All membership to be paid by March 31. County Board tickets are on sale and can be collected from the treasurer at any time, especially at the lotto draw. SCOUTS

Mountmellick hosted the Slieve Bloom County Cub Talent Show in the Arts Centre on Saturday January 31. Groups from Rathdowney, Portlaoise, Mountrath and Mountmellick showed their many talents with song, dance and drama and afterwards enjoyed a disco in the Quaker Hall with music supplied by Colin O’Reilly and Aodhán Keady.  Mountmellick cubs Chloe Dwyer, Eimear Comerford, Conor Byrne, Lily Gordon & Zoe Whiteley performed Riverdance, Jack Bowe, Colin Pierce, Alex O’Mahoney, Jake Colbert and Adam Fitzpatrick played a selection of tunes on accordion, violin, tin whistle and guitars.

There are a few calendars still on sale at €5 in O’Gorman’s and Hanlon’s or from leaders.

FASHION SHOW

Mountmellick Scout group is holding a fashion show on Thursday April 9 at 8 pm in the Community School, tickets €10 each with proceeds towards the scout trip to Japan for the World Jamboree. Tables will be available for anyone who wishes to display their crafts in jewelry, handbags, knitting, cards, novelty/wedding cakes etc., at €20 per table, to book contact Annette 087 9438430.   Doors open on the night at 7 pm so that people can view the crafts and enjoy a complimentary cup of tea or coffee.

LIBRARY

The library has a new selection of children’s fiction and picture books. Why not pop in and borrow one!

EXHIBITION

An exhibition of paintings by local artist Sarah Williams titled ‘A Town Called Mountmellick’ is on display in the library gallery until Saturday February 28. These paintings explore the lost landscapes of Mountmellick and among them are streets and shop fronts based in the town. Paintings, prints and postcards featuring the paintings may be bought from the library and also from Breda’s Giftshop.

KNITTING GROUP

The library knitting/crochet group meets each Tuesday from 10.30am to 12.30pm. Bring along your needles and wool and join us for a cuppa and a chat.

LANGUAGES AT LIBRARY

Beginners Spanish Classes for adults start on Tuesday March 3. This is an eight week course and the fee is €50. Contact 057 8644572 for further details.

French conversation classes for adults begin on Friday March 6 at 11am. Classes will run for eight weeks and the course fee is €50. A native French speaker will facilitate the course. Contact the library to book a place.

PAINT YOUR PET

‘Paint your Pet’ workshops with artist Lorraine Walsh begin on Friday March 6 in the library. The classes will run for 4 consecutive weeks from 10.30am to 12.30pm. Classes are free but you supply your own materials. Contact 057 8644572 if you are interested in taking part.

MEN’S SHED

MACRA PANTO

This year’s Macra production of ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ was greatly enjoyed with a full house every night. Macra thanks all who came and supported this annual event. MOUNTMELLICK WORK

YARNBOMB MEETINGS

Yarnbomb meetings on Tuesday nights at 7.30pm in the Methodist Hall. All who can knit and crochet or who would like to learn are welcome along. The 2015 yarnbomb will be bigger and better. Why not come along and join the fun.

ACTIVE RETIREMENT

The AGM will be held on Wednesday February 18 at 10.30 am in MDA and we trust all members will attend.

The usual activities are: Mondays: Boccia in the Macra hall at 7.30pm. Tuesdays: aqua aerobics in Portlaoise Leisure Centre at noon (free bus from MDA at 11.15am). Thursdays: music and song in St Vincent’s Hospital. New members welcome, contact 086 0618955.
