Abbeyleix and Portlaoise Lions clubs are holding an open day at Abbeyleix Estate Gardens on Sunday next July 7 from 2 – 6pm. Light refreshments available in the courtyard. Proceeds in aid of Lions Charities. Support much appreciated.


Portlaoise Comhaltas are presenting a Summer Seisiún at the Portlaoise Heritage Hotel, at 8.30pm each Thursday from July 4-August 8. Details were announced on National Music Day when the branch played a lunch time concert at the JFL Plaza at Co Hall. The seisiún will include an informal segment when members of the audience may volunteer to sing, play or tell a story. Members of Comhaltas branches throughout the county will also be in attendance - admission free.


Free lunchtime concert, Wednesday, July 3, from 1.10 - 1.50pm at St Peter’s Church, Market Square, Portlaoise, featuring David O’Shea (organist and director of music of Sandford Church, Ranelagh and St Philip’s, Milltown) on the organ with Niall O’Sullivan (trumpet). All welcome. Bring your lunch and come and go as you please (quietly). Donations will be split between the Laois Hospice, the Dunamaise Arts Centre and St Peter’s Church, Portlaoise.

Summer arts

The Arts Office, Laois County Council summer arts programme kick off in Portlaoise this week with a dance workshops with dance artist Erica Borges at the Dunamaise Arts Centre from Monday/Friday July 1-5 from 11am-1pm , for ages 9 to 15.

Youth cafe

Please Support the Portlaoise Youth Cafe coffee morning at the Portlaoise Parish Centre on Friday, July 5 at 10:30am. The Cafe is a safe friendly, fun space where young people are encouraged and supported by caring, Garda vetted and trained volunteers/staff. Donations go directly programmes and activities for young people.


There was no winner of the jackpot in the Portlaoise Parish Lotto when the numbers were drawn on June 27. Numbers: 1,4,6,29. The 14 match 3 winners won €72 each. This week’s jackpot is €20,000.

Congratulations to Gary Holmes who will be ordained Deacon in Paris, where he is studying, this weekend. He hopes to be ordained to the priesthood next year. He is a son of the late Tom and Nuala Holmes of Chantiere Gate, Portlaoise.

Congrats also to Sean Hyland who was ordained Deacon on June 14 in Rome.

Portlaoise Parish welcomes Fr Chilton Fernandaz from Kerala in India who is spending July in the Parish. He is from the same region as Fr George.
