Laois Community Forum comprises of 18 members who represent community and voluntary groups in the five electoral areas in Laois – Portlaoise, Emo, Mountmellick, Borris-in-Ossory and Luggacurran areas.

There are approximately 700 members registered with the Forum who represent a wide diversity of interests across the County. Membership is free.

The main aim of the Forum is to create links within the community sector, by holding events of a common theme which may affect similar groups across the county, residents and Community Alert networking events, networking days for older people, electoral area public meetings, where the Forum meets and talks to community groups from all over the county. The Forum also aims to promote the activities of community groups, through the website www.laoiscommunityforum.ie and in other ways.

One of the main events that the Forum initiated last year was the hosting of a Mental Health Awareness Week called Laois CONNECTS which is taking place from Saturday 28th September to Saturday 5th October 2013. This week is aimed to help people in Communities across Laois to cope and engage with Mental Health issues. Full programme available on www.laoiscommunityforum.ie/laoisconnects

One of key upcoming highlights in the Forum’s calendar is the hosting of the Laois Community and Voluntary Awards which will held in November again this year. Last year, 73 nominees were honoured for their contribution to Community and voluntary life in County Laois, for their hard work and dedication to making their local area a better place to live by enhancing it through sports, the arts, social/community services, the environment, heritage and through developing its youth. There is also a separate category to nominate for the ‘Unsung Hero’ Award which recognizes the outstanding contribution that an individual has made to community life in Laois.
