REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY

A wreath laying and prayer service cermony takes place on Sunday November 9 at 12 noon at the Millview Memorial Park Portlaoise to commemorate the war dead. The town’s St Joseph’s Accordian Band will parade on the day. Also present will be Post 27 United Nations Veterans’ Association. A plaque will be unveiled also. All are welcome.

Leaves Festival

Children’s Bookclub in Library Friday afternoons at 3.30-4.15pm every fortnight, 8-10 year olds and 11-12 yr olds group. Free storytelling workshop with children’s author Liz Weir in Portlaoise Library on Friday, November 21 from 10am-4pm. Application form in library. Booking is essential. Includes a children’s story time from 3pm-4pm for 3-9yr olds. Adult book club now taking names.

Concern fast

A meeting to organise the Concern Christmas Fast on November 27-29 takes place in the Portlaoise Parish Centre on Tuesday, November 11 at 7pm. Jonathon Power the fundraising manager with concern will attend. All are welcome.

The annual Laois Craft Group Christmas Craft Fair takes place in the Laois Shopping between 10am-6pm on Saturday & Sunday. November 7-8.

Trad for Trocaire

Remembering those in need, the Portlaoise branch will hold a Trad for Trocaire session at Laois Shopping Centre on November 21.

Heritage Society

Laois Heritage Society Lecture Series Autumn/Winter meetings take place at The Portlaoise Heritage Hotel. Free Admission to all lectures and all are welcome. November 20, 8.30pm: ‘How Laois Won the All-Ireland Hurling Championship of 1915’ by Paul Rouse. December 11 8.30pm: Music in Maryborough 1900 – 1950’ by John Dunne.

Science Week

Award-winning science writer and broadcaster, Mary Mulvihill of ‘Ingenious Ireland’ will speak in Portlaoise Library on November 12. Mary runs popular science walking tours of Dublin, writes a science columnist for The Irish Times.

Toastmasters

The next meeting of Toastmasters takes place on Monday, November 10 at 8pm takes place in the Killeshin. Guests are welcome.

Condolences to the family of the late Anne (Bab) Conroy (nee Rafter) ‘Rockview Bungalow’, Mountrath Rd, Portlaoise who died on October 23 peacefully, after a long illness bravely borne in the loving care of her family and the staff of St Brigid’s Hospital Shaen. Relict of Paddy. Deeply regretted by her loving daughters, Doreen, Mary, Anne, and son PJ, sisters Mary (Hyland) and Carmel (Stenson), brothers Vincent and Joe extended family, relatives and friends. Late Anna HEFFERNAN
