Huge congratulations to our very own Eoghan O’Neill who won the Mr Personality title last weekend. The festival was hosted by Kilkenny city Macra in the Springhill Court Hotel Kilkenny. Eoghan represented Laois in the competition and did his club and county proud. Well done, Eoghan, from all in Mountmellick Macra.
The volleyball competition also took place at the weekend, well done to our team that took part in the Watershed, Kilkenny. Best of luck to Norman Thompson who will take part in the question time competition in Cashel this Friday.
PIONEER QUIZ WINNERS
Congratulations to the Mountmellick junior PTAA quiz team who won the All-Ireland in Pallas Green Limerick at the weekend. The winning panel were Sabrina Dempsey, Claire Ging, Andrew Conroy, Alan Conroy and John Ryan.
Congratulations also to the senior team who achieved fourth place in the All-Ireland.
A parish sale and coffee morning will be held in Coolbanagher church Emo on Saturday May 5 from 11am to 1pm. Everyone welcome. The church will be open for anyone who would like to come and have a look round. The church was designed by James Gandon (who designed the Four Courts and Custom House in Dublin as well as Emo Court). Follow the brown tourist sign for the church from Emo village.

ACTIVE RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION
The next meeting will be in the MDA on Wednesday May 2 at 10.30am. The May outing will be on Wednesday May 23, so keep that day free. There will be details to follow. The weekly activities continue with dancing in Wolfe Tone Court on Mondays from 3pm until 4.30pm and Boccia in the Macra Hall at 7.30pm. On Tuesdays there is aqua aerobics in Portlaoise leisure centre at noon. The free bus to this leaves the MDA at 11.15am. Music and song are on Wednesdays in St Vincent’s Hospital from 6.15pm until 7.45pm. Art classes continue until Thursday May 10.
Mountmellick youth club will be holding a registration night on Friday May 3 from 8pm until 9pm in the sports complex games room. New members are welcome. The club caters for youths aged 10 to 16. There is a €5 registration fee and membership is €2 per week. Parent/guardian please attend the registration night with youth. There is a variety of weekly activities. Cubs enjoyed a lecture with James from Astronomy Ireland last week when he brought astronomy to life through his visual presentation and inter-action in the MDA Heritage Centre. All were watching the night sky on Saturday to view a meteor shower which was to be seen through the night. Beavers enjoyed their Easter egg hike in Garryhinch Woods recently and also enjoyed the county beaver day out on Sunday April 29 which was themed Celtic warriors. Scouts are busy preparing for the county shield.

THE ROCK ROAD RACE
The Rock GAA Club would like to thank most sincerely everyone who participated in their inaugural 5 mile road race. It was a tremendous success due in no small way to the reliable committee members who gave freely and generously of their time. A special word of thanks goes to Dan Allen whose brainchild it was that initially got this project up and running. Thanks to all the club’s sponsors on the day. Coaching for Gaelic Football for girls and boys U8, U10, U12 and U14 continues at the Rock on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm. OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE CLUBHOUSE
President of the GAA Liam O’Neill will officially open the new club house on Friday May 11 at 7pm. This will be followed by an intercounty senior football game between Laois and Offaly at 7.30pm.
A family fun day will be held on Saturday May 12 in Acragar with competitions for all juveniles in both hurling and football. The GAA road show will also be present. It promises to be a great fun day for all.

Training for all U10 and U12 continues on Mondays at 6pm in Acragar. New members are very welcome. Further up the age groups club training continues from 16 upwards on Tuesday and Fridays.
LAOIS MARTIAL ARTS
