Whitehorse Festival for Mountrath

MOUNTRATH’S third annual Whitehorse Festival will take place from this Saturday July 14 to Sunday July 22, with a programme of arts, music, sports and social events.

MOUNTRATH’S third annual Whitehorse Festival will take place from this Saturday July 14 to Sunday July 22, with a programme of arts, music, sports and social events.

It will begin with a Shorts ‘n’ Shades launch party in Eddie Kirwan’s Bar with music by local band Radio Nowhere. Admission is €5 with all proceeds going to the festival fund. As well as this, the Pub Challenge will see rings, darts, pool and other activities. Hells Kitchen at Helens on Tuesday and Wednesday evening will host cooking and bakery demonstrations.

Local artist Kevin Kavanagh will be creating a festival art trail - putting different pictures and portraits and other art installations in different business windows and vacant shops - which will all be on display for the week. The Alf Harvey Metac Exhibition will also be on display in Eddie Phelan’s Restaurant for the duration of the festival.

On Friday July 20 there will be a number of activities in the town park, including a demonstration on how to use all the new gym equipment and the official opening of the new table tennis tables. There will also the a cupcake party in the Cosy Cafe. On Saturday July 21 there will be a Treasure Hunt at 2pm - to take part in the festival treasure hunt people will need a car for solving clues along the hunt. At 8pm the festival fashion show will take place in St Fintan’s Hall in association with Annie Apple.

Sunday July 22 is the festival’s climax. A family fun day will be held in the Market Square, with bouncy castles, slides, face painting and clown performance for kids. There will also be arts and crafts stall and the towns first busking festival, placing musicians throughout the town from roughly 3-7 before finishing in a huge festival jam to finish it all off.

A festival route will also be laid out for a dog walk, a high nelly run and the annual festival mini marathon - starting at 12pm from the town square. Dog walk participants will also be given doggy bags in conjunction with Mountrath Tidy Towns to raise awareness in preventing dog fouling. There will also be a festival music trail held throughout the weekend in all the pubs.
