The Rock GAA AGM will be held in the clubhouse on Saturday December 8 at 7pm sharp. All are welcome to attend. The monster auction recently held in the clubhouse was a tremendous success. A large crowd attended and there were many bargains availed of throughout the afternoon. The club’s committee extend its sincere appreciation to everyone who donated so generously to the auction and to all who attended on the day and made purchases. Thanks also to all committee and club members who worked so hard in the weeks and days leading up the event, on the day itself and afterwards. As usual your dedication is vital to the success of these fundraisers and is greatly appreciated.

CHRISTMAS STREET LIGHTS

A table quiz in aid of the above will be held on Friday November 30 in The Druid at 9.30pm sharp. Table of four €20. All support appreciated.

MISSION ALIVE

The annual Mission Alive table quiz will take place in the Mellick Inn on Wednesday December 5 at 9.30pm. The quizmaster is Michael Linehan. The proceeds of the quiz will go to the Orphan Project in Lusaka, Zambia.
The proceeds of last year’s quiz and the summer coffee morning have been mainly spent on school fees, uniforms and requisites and also food and medical care for the children.All the money is sent directly to the orphan project.
If you are unable to attend the quiz donations can be given to Fr Noel Dunphy.
We thank the people who donated raffle prizes last year and hope many will be able to donate prizes again this year.

HOSPICE FUNDRAISER

A fundraiser in aid of Laois Hospice will be held in St Paul’s hall, Parnell St on Tuesday December 4 from 10am to 1pm. There will be new and used goods for sale. Raffle tickets will be sold with many great prizes to win. Tea and cake will be available while you browse.

KNITTING CIRCLE

The knitting circle meets each Tuesday from 10.30am to noon in the library. Drop in for a cuppa and a chat. All donations of wool would be greatly appreciated.

COMHALTAS

There will be no class on Tuesday November 27 (tonight). Classes will return next week along with the cupla focal which has started and has a good attendance. The Christmas party is on Tuesday December 11 in the YM Hall across from the square, starting at 7.30pm. Well done to all who turned up to play at the recent seisiun in the ICA Hall. It is nice to get a chance to play away from the classes.

MACRA

The Laois Macra Christmas party takes place on Saturday December 1 in The Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise. This is always a fantastic event and is open to all members, current, past and prospective. If interested contact Sharon on 087 9563106.

ACTIVE RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION

The next meeting will be in the MDA at 10.30am on Wednesday November 28 (tomorrow) with a talk on ‘Can we avoid getting Dementia? On Wednesday December 12 the group will have a music and mince pies party. New members are always welcome.

This Friday November 30, the November outing is to The Titanic exhibition, bus leaving the MDA at 8.15am. All places are now filled but if you would like to put your name on the waiting list please notify a committee member.

Next Tuesday December 4, a dried wild flower craft workshop will be held from 11am to 1pm in the MDA. There are still a few places left.

The annual Christmas dinner dance will be in The Gandon Inn on Friday December 7. The meal is to be served at 7.30pm.

Weekly activities include Boccia in the Macra hall on Mondays at 7.30pm. Tuesdays: aqua aerobics in Portlaoise leisure centre at noon. The free bus to this leaves MDA at 11.15am. Wednesdays: there will be no dancing classes on Wednesday November 28. Dancing resumes on Wednesday December 5 from 3pm to 4.30pm in Wolfe Tone Court.

Thursdays: art classes in Wolfe Tone Court from 2pm to 4pm and music and song in St Vincent’s hospital from 2pm to 4pm.

WW1 SAILORS AND SOLDIERS

In conjunction with The Gathering 2013 and the centenary of WW1 in 2014, Mountmellick Museum would like to form a small group of interested people to research and ascertain information on local sailors and soldiers who fought in WW1. We hope to obtain enough information to hold an exhibition in remembrance of those who died and detail what life was like for those who returned to the Mountmellick area. If you would like to be part of this group, have a story to tell or have any artefacts from the Great War which you would like included in our project, contact Kathleen Comerford or Dolores Dempsey in the museum at 057 8624525.

BALLYFIN CHRISTMAS BAZAAR

The Ballyfin Christmas bazaar in aid of Ballyfin NS will take place in the community centre on Sunday December 2 from 10.30am to 4pm.
There will be a variety of stalls displaying handmade crafts and gifts, food, lots of games, wheel of fortune, raffles and a monster draw. The 1st prize is dinner for 2 in the exclusive Ballyfin House.
This will be a fun day out for all the family. Entrance will be €2 adults, children are free.

MOUNTMELLICK GAA

Congratulations to Sarsfield Gaels (Mountmellick, Ballyfin, and Kilcavan) who beat Portlaoise in the county Under 21 football final on Saturday November 17 in O’Moore park.

LAOIS MARTIAL ART

Classes for all ages from 4yrs old upwards held in Mountmellick and Portlaoise on Monday, Tuesday and Friday. There is a full matted professional gym including punch bags and boxing ring. Classes are taught by a 4th degree Irish national coach and National Champion. For details contact 087 2768843.

LATE JOSEPHINE GOODWIN

There was much regret at the death of Josephine Goodwin (nee Conroy) of Dublin and formerly of Emmet Terrace Mountmellick on Sunday November 18. Jonie’s funeral arrived at St Joseph’s church on Tuesday morning. Requiem mass was celebrated at noon with burial afterwards to St Joseph’s cemetery.

The sincere sympathy of the community is extended to Jonie’s family on their bereavement.

HERITAGE BOOK LAUNCH

All are invited to the launch of Laois Heritage Society’s newest journal on Thursday December 6 at 5.45pm in the Heritage Hotel Killenard. Minister of the Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht Jimmy Deenihan will officially perform the launch.

This journal contains facets of the history and heritage of our county with little known facts and stories now published. It would make an ideal Christmas present for all from Laois.

WELL DONE

Congrats to all the groups in Mountmellick area who were rewarded at the annual Laois Community and Voluntary Awards. These were: Mountmellick Community Care, Mountmellick Youth Development Centre, Mountmellick Active Retirement Association and Seamus O’Brien.

Rock out for Cuisle

Good fun, good music, and good food are all part of a Gala fundraiser taking place this Saturday December 1 at the Rock GAA Club.

The night is the culmination of a month long fundraiser by the ‘Cool Guys & Pink Haired Ladies’, who aim to raise a one-off €10,000 for The Cuisle Centre, who provide support to cancer sufferers and their families.

Over 120 locals took part in various ‘hair-raising’ challenges over the month, with headshaves and waxing planned on the night, MC is Jim O’Brien.

It kicks off at 8pm with a wine reception and live local music, and trad music in a marquee. The band Silent Wave come on at 10, followed by a bbq and disco. Free admission with donations welcome and a free half-hourly bus service will run from O’Connell Square. All welcome for a great cause.
