Portarlington Tidy Towns are holding a Table Quiz in the Hawthorn Lounge on Friday February 15 to raise funds so they can enhance the town over the summer months with Hanging Baskets and containers full of flowers. They need your support so put the 15th in your diary and give them your support.
Congratulations to Mick Dunne, Borris Road Portlaoise and James Rea of Clough Ballacolla (pictured right) who both recently graduated from Ballyfermot College Dublin with a HND in Media Production (Radio), and who had their Graduation Ceremony recently at the RDS Dublin. Mick is the youngest son of Jay and Ann Dunne, Pine Villa Portarlington. Best of luck to both men on their future careers.

Eoin McCann (pictured with his family, below) started playing basketball for The Kestrels Club in Portarlington two years ago. In October 2011 the club sent him for trials for a two year Irish Player development programme. Through many trials, training sessions, travelling, hard work and determination, in September 2012 Eoin was selected in the final 12 young men for the Men’s U-16 Irish National Basketball Team and they will travel and compete in Sarajevo, Bosnia in the European Championships in August 2013. They have already played and won against England, Wales, Scotland and Denmark. The twelve are made up of young men from Belfast, Monaghan, Dublin, Sligo, Cork and Eoin flies the flag proudly for Laois. Eoin is a son of Brendan and Grainnne McCann and has one sister, Sarah.
He also plays Gaelic Football for Portarlington and has played at County level with Laois. He plays his club basketball team with the Kestrels Club in Portarlington. We wish Eoin all the best on this hugely exciting and rewarding upcoming challenge as an International Irish Basketball Player.
It was with great sadness that the town heard of the death of Michael Webster of French Church Street, who passed away at his home on Monday January 28, after a long illness. Michael will be sadly missed by his devoted wife Dill, his sons Brian and Louis, daughters Moire, Colette Ann and Orla, his grandchildren, extended family and friends. Michael was well known in his newsagents for many years, and was known for his kindness to everyone who called to him, or had their daily newspaper delivered from Michael’s shop. Requiem Mass took place on Thursday January 31 at St Michael’s Church, with burial after in St Michael’s Cemetery. May Michael Rest in Peace.
Condolences to the family of Patrick (Patsy) Mitchell, the Oaks Killnacourt & formerly of Ballyfermot who passed away on Wednesday January 23 after a short illness. Patsy will be sadly missed by his partner Mary, his brother, sisters, extended family and many friends. Requiem Mass took place on Friday January 25 in St. Michael’s Church, with burial after in St. Michael’s Cemetery. May Patsy rest in Peace.

The 42nd AGM of Portarlington Social Services/Meals on Wheels took place in the Community Centre on Friday January 25. The following were elected- Chairperson-Ann Bourke Dunne, Secretary- Geraldine O’Reilly, Treasurer- Eva Johnston. Committee- Ken Dunne, Patsy McGuinness, Rory Whelan, Joan Kenna, Jenny Champ, Mary Maher & Gaynor Darcy. Card Secretary- Breda Dunne. Trustees-Dorothy Odlum, Dr. Adrian Honan, Geraldine O’Reilly & Ken Dunne. The Centre, which opened in 1975 is currently undergoing extensive renovations. Hoping to be completed by Easter. The Committee would like to thank past and present dedicated Committee members, the staff who prepare up to 5,000 meals every year, the 60 plus deliverers, the hostesses for the Wednesday night Bingo. Thanks also to to the Community Employment Scheme, the PCDA, and the Community of Portarlington and local businesses for their generous support over the years. Thanks to people for personal donations and to those who organise events to raise funds to keep our Services going.

Annual Gala Ball
The annual gala ball will take place on Friday Febuary 22 in the Heritage Golf and Spa resort Killenard. This year’s charity will be Laois/Offaly Autism Association. Tickets are €50 and can be purchased from Maria Molloy, Marie Corcoran and Collette Kennedy. As usual hoping for a full house on the night.
The Portarlington Senior Citizens 58th Annual Party took place on Sunday January 27 2013 in the Heritage Hotel Killenard. This year was the best attendance ever, with 249 Senior Citizens attending, a great day was had by all.
The Committee would like to thank all our Senior Citizens who attended and made the day such a great event. The Committee would also like to thank all who sponsored prizes and gifts, and who helped in any way to make the event such a success.
