SCOUTS

A registration and information night for beavers, cubs and scouts will be held on Thursday September 5 in the Owenass Hall from 7.30pm to 8.30pm. Beavers must be 6 years of age, cubs 9 years and scouts 12 years, boys and girls in all sections. Leaders from each section will be present on the night.

CAPE CLEAR

KILCAVAN 5K

Clonaghadoo hall committee are having their annual Kilcavan 5K run/walk on Friday September 6 at 7pm. Registration at Clonaghadoo Church from 6pm. Adults €10, juveniles €5. There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd & 3rd male and female and also many more prizes on the night. Refreshments served afterwards.

COMPUTER COURSES

These will begin in September at MDA and funding may be available if you are unemployed. Contact Imelda at 057 8624525 for enquiries. Courses will include FETAC level 3, 4, 5 & 6 courses and also ECDL.

ART CLASSES

Classes for adults and children at Kilbride art group will resume in the first week of September and continue until December. Contact Una for times, details and bookings at 086 2392997.

Our Supervalu bucket collection is coming up on Saturday September 14. If anyone wishes to help out with an hour or two please contact Margaret at 085 7138940.

ADULT BOOK CLUB

Interested in joining a book club? The library book club will resume in September. The club will meet in the library on the first Tuesday of each month from 11am to 12pm. Please call in or phone the library if you wish to join.

LIBRARY EXHIBITION

Paul Weerasekera, a Limerick based artist, will exhibit his work in the library gallery from September 3 to 28. Titled ‘Paintings of Laois & Offaly’, it features acrylic on canvas scenes from both counties including Rosenallis, Shannon Harbour, Tullamore and Stradbally. Born in Sri Lanka, Paul trained as an architect in the UK and also studied art and design. He has lived in Ireland for 25 years and had numerous solo exhibitions. All are welcome along.

ACTIVE RETIRED

The group meetings will resume on Wednesday September 4. Weekly activities: Mondays, Boccia in the Macra hall. Tuesdays aqua aerobics in Portlaoise leisure centre at noon, with the free bus leaving MDA at 11.15am. Thursday’s music and song in St Vincent’s Hospital from 2pm to 4pm.

THE ROCK GATHERING

This community based social event will take place on Saturday October 26 with all welcome to attend. Further details to follow.

Culture night

There are two events in the town to mark National Culture Night on Friday September 20.

Mountmellick Comhaltas will perform a free concert in the library from 4.30 to 5.30pm. Visitors can tour the current exhibition while enjoying light refreshments. Mountmellick Drama Group are holding an Open Evening from 8pm to 9.30pm in The Arts Centre. All drama fans invited on a tour backstage, new members welcome to join as performers or backstage.

A couch to 5km running group for men has been set up and new members are welcome to join at any time. The group meets for training Tuesday & Thursday 7pm, Saturday 6pm at the MDA. For information contact Adam at 0861094417.

laTE CARlO WESTMAN

There was much sadness at the sudden death of Carlo Westman of Irishtown at his home on Friday August 23. A well respected member of the community, Carlo was held in the highest regard by all who knew him. Carlo was predeceased by his son Stephen. Remains reposed at his residence until removal on Saturday evening to St Joseph’s Church. Requiem mass was celebrated at noon on Sunday with burial afterwards to St Joseph’s cemetery. The sincere sympathy of the community is extended to Carlo’s wife Crissie, his daughters Breda and Ann, family, relatives, neighbours and friends on their bereavement.

LATE PETER HEALION

It was with regret that the community heard of the death of Peter Healion of Bridge Street on Saturday August 24 at his home. Peter was one of the older members of our business community, a quiet man held in good esteem, his passing is sadly regretted. Remains reposed at Moloney’s Funeral Home until removal to St Joseph’s Church on Monday evening. Requiem mass was celebrated on Tuesday at noon with burial afterwards to St Joseph’s cemetery. The sincere sympathy of the community is extended to Peter’s wife Elizabeth, his sons and daughters, family, relatives, neighbours and friends on their bereavement.
