A fine afternoon on Sunday 3rd November 2013 last favoured a very good attendance of both old and young at the unveiling of two plaques marking historic sites in the townland of Castlemarket. The plaque at the entrance to the Academy field, owned by Mr James Phelan, Abbeyleix, commemorates the Castlemarket Classical Mercantile and Mathematical School (1810 - 1816). This was unveiled by Mr. Dermot Dorgan, local historian who spoke on the extensive buildings that existed then and the school’s rapid rise and fall. The other plaque situated at the old entrance to Ladywell farm which was the site of a Monster Anti-Tithe Meeting in the summer of 1838. This was unveiled by Mr Kevin Lalor Fitzpatrick, Raheen whose direct ancestor was Mr Patrick Lalor, (1789 - 1856) of Tinakill House, Raheen, MP for Queen’s County who was the principal speaker at the meeting. All this was made possible by the efforts of Ballyouskill History Committee whose chairperson Mr. Larry Cummins introduced the proceedings and thanked all those who participated on the day and equally as important those who worked so hard to prepare the sites beforehand.
Sincere condolences are extended to the Mooney families, Closhawn, Attanagh on the sad passing of their close relative Alan Mooney, Dean Cavanagh Place, Kilkenny who was interred during the week. May he rest in peace.
