As part of this year’s spring clean, Portarlington Tidy Town’s are organising the cleaning of several areas in the town on Saturday April 5 from 10am which will be completed in two hours. The Tidy Town’s are asking people on the day to give an hour or two to help in this voluntary effort. Gloves, rubbish bags and a truck to transport the rubbish will be available on the day. If you wish to have your road or housing estate included in the clean up, please contact David Maher on 086 3475357.

We are currently convening the People’s Energy Charter and will be reporting back on the meeting with officials at the Dept of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources scheduled for April 2. Laois has also been selected as a pilot local authority for establishment of citizen participation measures in local government reform. We have a local government reform seminar on April 14 at 7pm in Treo Nua. As part of the reform process we must compile a list of environmental groups in the county. The season is now well underway, with some excellent trout landed. PJ Lalor, Bracklone St, landed a superb trout of three and three quarter pounds. Some great bags of trout have been recorded over the opening two weeks. Tom Carey had six fish to one pound, which were all returned safely and Adrian Ward had ten trout on opening day, and repeated the feat the following day. Permits are now available from PJ Hyland, Main St Portalington, and Finlays Pub Bracklone St Portarlington.

Monster raffle for the Social Services/Meals on Wheels will take place on Wednesday April 16 at the senior citizens bingo in the Social Services Centre. A book of six tickets will only cost you €5. Deepest sympathy to the family of Martha Frances Wyse (nee Grattan) who passed away on Thursday March 20 at her residence 1, Orchard Drive. Martha will be sadly missed by her loving husband Patrick, her sons, daughters, grandchildren and her extended family and friends. Martha was originally from Clonmel, Clonbullogue. Requiem mass took place in St Michael’s Church, with burial after in St Michael’s Cemetery. May Martha rest in peace.
