The Laois Heritage Forum have just released a free audio-guide to the monastic trail of Laois.
Produced in conjunction with Laois Tourism and with the support of Laois Partnership, the guide has been produced by Abarta Audioguides.
This audio guide will lead the listener around the beautiful landscape of Laois to discover the remains of ancient churches and monasteries and to hear stories of saints and sinners at the dawn of Christianity in Ireland.
Laois County Council heritage officer Catherine Casey said that the guides are already being well received.
“There has been a steady trail since we released the guides and we will be releasing more over the summer. They give a taste of what we have on offer in Laois. It was great to have Laois Tourism on board, and great to have the support of Laois Partnership, they have already done lots for heritage and promoting the county.”
Catherine said that there are eight tracks on the audioguide, picked because of their accessibility to the public and because of their importance to heritage in the county.
On the tour the listener will discover wonderful historical sites like Aghaboe Abbey, Clonenagh, Coolbanagher, Timahoe with its famous round tower and Killeshin, one of the most beautiful Romanesque sites in Ireland.
The audio-guide also comes with written directions to help people find their way around the countryside of Laois.
The audio-guide is designed to be played on smart-phones or mp3 players, or can be easily burned to a CD. More audio-guides will become available in the coming weeks.
