Downtown Portlaoise are holding a Pub Quiz on the November 27 in The Lethean, followed by a Comedy Night on the November 28 in Kavanagh’s, in order to raise some much-needed funds for this year’s Christmas lights. REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY

A wreath laying and prayer service cermony takes place on Sunday November 9 at 12 noon at the Millview Memorial Park Portlaoise to commemorate the war dead. The town’s St Joseph’s Accordian Band will parade on the day. Also present will be Post 27 United Nations Veterans’ Association. A plaque will be unveiled also. All are welcome.

Mens Sheds

As part of the Irish Times / Pfizer Healthy Towns project the Portlaoise Men’s shed will be hosting free men’s health checks in conjunction with the Irish Heart Foundation on Tuesday 28 from 9am to 5pm at Portlaoise Equestrian centre. Limited availability contact 086-2624092. Portlaoise Mens Shed in conjunction with Laois County Council host an art workshop every Tuesday night at 7.30pm. Sketching and painting by local artist Conor Brennan.

Birdwatch

Once a month during the winter, a group of Laois volunteers spend Sunday morning at the Durrow Curragh in the south of the county recording bird numbers as part of the Irish Wetland Bird Survey (IWeBS). At the next meeting of the Laois branch of BirdWatchIreland at the Portlaoise Parish Centre on Tuesday 28 October at 8pm, wetland bird expert Helen Boland will speak about IWeBS, and also about the International Swan Census this year. Talk is open to all with an interest in wildlife. Entry free but contributions welcome.

On Sunday 2 November we will have an outing to the East Coast Nature Reserve at Blackditch, Co Wicklow. Again, all are welcome. Meet at County Hall, Portlaoise, at 9am.

Talk on Dyslexia. Harriet Doig, Information Officer with Dyslexia Association of Ireland , will be holding a talk in Portlaoise Library on encouraging children with dyslexia to read. The talk will take place on Thursday, November 20 at 6.30pm. Topics include understanding dyslexia , the benefits of reading for pleasure, good fiction for primary school children with dyslexia, Children’s books about dyslexia, paired reading and use of technology including screen readers, audio books and ebooks. Children’s Bookclub in Portlaoise Library Friday afternoons at 3.30-4.15pm club meet every fortnight, 8-10 year olds and 11-12 yr olds group. Free storytelling workshop with children’s author Liz Weir in Portlaoise Library on Friday, November 21 from 10am-4pm. Application form in library. Booking is essential. Includes a children’s story time from 3pm-4pm for 3-9yr olds. Adult book club now taking names. REtired civil & public servant

A meeting will be held from 11am-1pm on Tuesday, October 28 in the Portlaoise Parish Centre with a view to setting up a Laois Branch of the Retired Civil & Public Servants Association. All retirees invited including Eircom, An Post, Coillte etc. Support needed to prevent further cuts to pensions and to have pensions restored to former level.

Heritage Society

Laois Heritage Society Lecture Series Autumn/Winter meetings take place at The Portlaoise Heritage Hotel. Free Admission to all lectures and all are welcome. Portlaoise Youth Cafe are holding their annual table quiz in Grellan Delaney’s, Main St, Portlaoise at 8pm on Wednesday, October 29. A table of 4 is €20. Excellent spot prizes to be won on the night.

Science Week

Award-winning science writer and broadcaster, Mary Mulvihill of ‘Ingenious Ireland’ will speak in Portlaoise Library on November 12. Mary runs popular science walking tours of Dublin, writes a science columnist for The Irish Times.

Late Kevin Graham

Condolences to the family of the late Kevin Graham of Ballydavis North, Portlaoise, who died on October 18 peacefully at home. Much loved father of Caroline (Dunphy), Enda, Kevin, Anthony, Brian, Diarmuid, Sinead and his good friend Julie. Deeply extended family, relatives and friends. Reposed at his home. Removal to SS Peter & Paul’s Church, Portlaoise for requiem mass. Interment afterwards in Ss Peter & Paul’s Cemetery.
