Cemetery collection

Portlaoise Cemetery Committee’s annual church gate collection will take place next Saturday and Sunday, February 21 & 22. Your support for the Committee’s ongoing work would be deeply appreciated.

Trocáire

Lenten collection boxes available at church poarches or in Parish centre. Cup of tea and hot cross buns in the Parish Centre each Friday after 10am mass during lent. Poceeds to Trócaire.

Railway talk

Local historian and former school principal, Niall McElwaine, will give a talk titled General History of Ireland’s Railways in the Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise, on Thursday, March 19 at 8pm. It is the first talk in the spring series of lectures organised by Laois Heritage Society. It promises to be a very interesting evening and all are welcome.

Parish Lotto

Portlaoise Parish Community lotto draw results for Thursday, March 12. Nos: 01,12,19,22. No jackpot winner. The 9 Match 3s won €112 each. This week’s jackpot is €20,000.

Sing for joy

Fatima Fund

The Fatima invalid fund annual coffee morning and cake sale in the parish centre after the 10am mass on Tuesday, March 31. All baked donations to Maura O’Brien on 086 3344722 tea coffee and cakes served. Come along, bring a friend, sit, sup and socialise.

Camogie

Camogie training on the astro turf at leisure centre from u8 to u14 on Saturday 1-2pm. All new members welcome.

Table quiz fundraiser for the Camoige club on Thursday, March 26 at 9pm in Ryan’s Pub, table of four €40. Can all parents bring a team on the night as this is an essential fundraiser.

Ladies GAA

Registration Days for 2015 will be held on Sunday March 22 and Sunday March 29 in Rathleague at 11am to 12pm for all players. Easy Pay facility available on both days. New members welcome all ages. Any queries contact any committee member.

Dunamaise Community alert

Dunamaise Community Alert AGM in the Anglican Church of the Holy Trinity under the Rock of Dunamaise on next Monday night March 23rd commencing at eight o’clock. Community alert has been in this area for much longer that most but is very important part of rural life today and the Community request that each house send at least one representative to the meeting.

1916 Commemoration

Plans are underway for the commemoration next year of the 100th Anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising in Laois. Laois County Council is asking the public around the county to submit ideas and plans for how the anniversary should be commemorated. Submissions or any other queries or comments on plans for ”Laois 2016” can be directed to: Catherine Casey, Ireland 2016 Co-Ordinator, Laois County Council, Portlaoise. Late John Coughlan

Condolences to the family of the late John Coughlan, ‘Curragha’, Mountrath Rd, Portlaoise late of Lorrha, Co Tipperary formerly Coughlan Concrete and Portlaoise Credit Union founding member. John passed away on March 7 peacefully, surrounded by his family in the care of Drominin Nursing Home, Stradbally. Beloved husband of Phil and father to David, Stephanie (Lewis), Pauline (Mahoney), Bernadette (Rigney) he is also deeply regretted by brother Jim, sister Bridie (Darcy) extended family, relatives, many friends. Reposed at his residence with removal to SS Peter & Paul’s Church Portlaoise for Requiem Mass followed by interment in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery, Portlaoise.

Late Anna Clarke
