Dunne’s Building Services are carrying out refurbishment works to Portarlington Library. The company say they will endeavour at all times to keep noise levels to a minimum. There may be times when, due to the use of machinery on site, etc, noise will exceed normal levels. They apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and assure residents of the local area of the best intentions at all times.
St Brigid’s Community Alert Group are holding a table quiz in Portarlington Golf Club on Saturday March 21 at 8pm. €5 per person or table of 4 €20. We will make up tables, or if you can fill a table all the better. Our quiz master has assured us that the questions are not too mind boggling. All proceeds are in aid of the ongoing costs of running our text alert in the community.
Portarlington Social Services Friday Cuppa is up and running each Friday from 12pm to 3pm in their centre, Link Rd. Come along and enjoy a cuppa and the company of other people on the day. The River Barrow trout season commences on March 17 to September 30. River permit will be on sale from this Monday, from Portarlington Auto Parts and Finlay’s Bar. Senior €30, OAP €10, junior €5. Lake permits senior €70, OAP/student €50, junior €20. The key deposit is now €20 or €15 if you return the old key, and only available from Portarlington Auto Parts, or contact Adrian Ward. The lake commences on April 1.
The Angling club draw will be held in Finlay’s Bar Bracklone St on Sunday April 5. Tickets are available from all members and will be available on the night.
Deepest sympathy to the family of Nancy Whelehan (nee Duffy) Closelands, Ballybrittas who passed away on Monday March 9. Nancy will be sadly missed by her loving husband Tom, sons Paddy, Bernie, Jim, Dick, Tom, Frank, Martin and William, daughters Rose (Byrne) and Mary (Lawlor), her sister, brothers, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, her extended family, neighbours and friends. Requiem mass took place in St John’s Church Killenard on Thursday March 12, with burial after in the adjoining cemetery.
Deepest sympathy to Ciara Huban and family the Glen Kilnacourt on the recent death of her mam, Lily Fleet (nee Holohan) Kilminchy Portlaoise and late of Clondalkin. Lily will be sadly missed by her loving husband Frank, daughters Ciara and Janet, grandchildren, her extended family and friends. Requiem mass took place on March 12 in SS Peter & Paul’s Church Portlaoise, with burial after in the Heath Cemetery.
Portarlington RFC are hosting the Cube 2015 in The Heritage Hotel Killenard on Friday March 27. We are looking for contestants to take part on the night. First prize of €1,000 down to €250 for 4th place. The Killenard Tidy Towns AGM will take place on Monday March 23 at 8pm in the Ballycarroll Room, Killenard Community Centre. Talk on Ireland’s Railways
Local historian and former school principal, Niall McElwaine, will give a talk titled ‘General History of Ireland’s Railways’ in the Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise, on Thursday, 19 March, at 8pm. It is the first talk in the spring series of lectures organised by Laois Heritage Society. It promises to be a very interesting evening and all are welcome.
