“GET recycling fast as lightening” is the green code for the pupils of Rath NS who prouldly raised their Green Flag this week.
The Green Flag was recently presented to the school after it had completed the steps as set out by An Taisce. The Green-Schools Programme is an award scheme that promotes and acknowledges long-term, whole school action for the environment.
It promotes a strong sense of teamwork among teachers, students and the wider community to reach a common high level goal. A committee consisting of teachers and pupils from each class monitored the progress carefully.
The children and staff of Rath School worked very hard to ensure that the waste generated in the school was significantly reduced through recycling, reusing and composting initiatives.
Last Wednesday, June 16 June they reaped the rewards of their hard work when Kitty Scully launched the Green Flag. Kitty, who appears on the RTE programme “How to Create a Garden” and is a past pupil of the school, hoisted the flag to an array of cheers on Thursday last.
Gráinne O’ Shea, Green School’s Co-ordinator, said the children are already looking forward to beginning working on their next flag which will be focused on energy.
