The end of an era was marked in Portlaoise and Mountrath recently with the holding of two functions to celebrate the contribution of teachers from local national schools.

The end of an era was marked in Portlaoise and Mountrath recently with the holding of two functions to celebrate the contribution of teachers from local national schools.

Portlaoise Branch INTO held a very successful retirement function in the Heritage Hotel Portlaoise on  Thursday, March 8 to honour six recently retired teachers.

These teachers included Maura Conroy, Sacred Heart NS Portlaoise, Pauline Tansey Sacred Heart NS Portlaoise,  Frances Harney,  Ballyfin NS,  Sr Ann Walsh Mountmellick Girls NS, Sarah Hyland Mountmellick Boys NS, and Deirdre Challoner Mountmellick Boys NS .

The function was attended by the INTO President Noreen Flynn. A presentation of Galway crystal was made on behalf of the branch by Enda Hickey, chairman and Deirdre Fleming, secretary.

The evening concluded with a lovely supper and some very enjoyable music by the local string quartet Vltava.

Meanwhile, a celebration was held last on Saturday, March 24 last in Mountrath Golf Club to mark the contribuion of Mrs Catherine Lorigan at the Pike of Rushall NS.

Mrs Lorigan retired after 37 years in the teaching profession including 21 years as principal.
