DURROW DEVELOPMENT FORUM

Durrow Development Forum would like to thank all those who got involved with the St Patrick’s Day celebrations. Whether you put in a float donated a prize came out to look at the parade or bought a ticket we are grateful for your support. A video of the parade has been uploaded to U Tube and can be found by searching Durrow 2012 You tube. The overall winner was the High Nelly bicycle club. Three special awards went to The Beavers (Smurfs), South Laois Tourism (The Quiet Man) and Derrywood residents Association (Searching for Treasure) Congratulations to all the winners.

DAFFODILS

The Dublin Road out of Durrow is adorned and much admired this month for the many thousand Daffodils planted last October. The place is awash with beautiful colour well done to the Development Forum and participants of Reach For The Stars who provided the funds for the daffodils and the Beach Hedging. Well done to Fred, Albert and their team of Planters.

SATURDAY MORNING MARKET

The local Market is open every Saturday morning from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm in the computer Centre Durrow beside the RC Church. There is now a beautiful Cake Stall. It is being run by Adrian Sheppard with fresh Cakes Buns Scones Tarts etc. Well worth a visit there are lots of other stalls including local grown fresh vegetables so come along and support your local market.

INVITATION

The Ryan family would like to mark the closing of the Stores Grocery by inviting all their customers old and new to a get together at the shop on Saturday afternoon March 31 from 4pm to closing time. Light refreshments will be served and no doubt the odd story swapped.

MINI MARATHON

The local ladies taking part in the Mini Marathon are doing it this year for Motor Neuron Research. The walk takes place in Dublin on June Bank Holiday weekend Monday June 7. Anyone interested in taking part can register on line or registration forms are in the Evening Herald on Wednesdays. It is advisable to register before end of March. Anyone interested in taking part should contact Susan Lawlor Lawlor’s Gala, Eileen Keenan or Marie Clooney to book a seat.

COMMUNITY ENDEAVOUR AWARD

Congratulations to Mary Walsh on winning the Community Endeavour award at the St Patrick’s Day Parade. Mary is involved in many worthy community projects and committees around the town and this award is in recognition of her many years of hard work for the community. Well done and congratulations Mary.

YOUNG VOICE OF LAOIS

Auditions have been held and sixteen successful contestants will appear at the final night Saturday April 21 in the Castle Arms Hotel at 8 pm. The overall winner will receive the Ronan Lawlor Memorial Cup and a voice training scholarship with the Laois School of Music. Please support.

SOCIAL

The Hawthorn Social Club are holding their monthly Social in the Hawthorn Inn Ballacolla on Saturday March 31. Resident band are providing the Music. Great night assured.

BRIDGE

LOTTO

There was no Winner of The Jackpot 6,400 Euro small draw winners were 30 euro Margaret Deegan 25 euro Caroline Dunne, 20 euro Kayla Dwyer. Next draw for a possible 6800 Euro will be held in Lennon’s Bar. All tickets must be handed in before 9.30 pm on the night of the draw to be included in that jackpot

FLOWER CLUB

Cullahill and Durrow Flower Club will meet on Monday April 2 in the Community Centre Cullahill. Enda Thompson Phelan will be in attendance for a teaching night. New members always welcome.

FISHING

Durrow/Cullohill District Anglers held two trout competitions since the season started on St Patrick’s Day. On March 17 the Mick Walsh Cup was up for grabs. Some beautiful large fish were caught and the winner was Declan McDonald, 2nd Seanie Delehunty and 3rd Alan Dwyer. Under 14 1st Patrick O’Regan, 2nd Brendan Donohue and 3rd Daniel O’Regan. On Sunday March 25 the Billy Lawlor Memorial Cup was fished, 1st Tommy Coffey, 2nd Pat Dunphy and 3rd Alan Dwyer. Under 18; Ben Conory , under 14 1st D. Brophy, 2nd O. Delehunty and 3rd D. O’Regan. Next competition will be held on Easter Sunday and it is a trout fishing for the Richard O’Rourke Memorial Trophy . Usual rules apply. Membership can be got from Lawlors Gala, the square, Lawlor’s Florists and Mick Walsh
