There will be two free lunchtime recitals at St Peter’s Church (COI), Market Square, Portlaoise during National Heritage Week. The first recital will take place on Tuesday, 21 August, 1.10pm-1.50pm and will feature Stanley Monkhouse on organ. Stanley had organs lessons with Andrew Seivewright at Carlisle Cathedral and Noel Rawsthorne at Liverpool Cathedral. He has been organist at churches in London, Nottingham and St Ann’s Dublin, and has given recitals in several English cathedrals. For many years he taught anatomy at the College of Surgeons in Dublin and is now the Rector of St. Peter’s COI Church, Portlaoise. He once won the Sawyer prize in the Associateship examination of the Royal College of Organists, and passed the Fellowship, but he thinks it’s doubtful that he would do either of things now.

THE HEATH CHURCH
Church of the Assumption the Heath: An examination of the trees at the outer boundary wall of the Heath cemetery has been undertaken. In the interest of safety, some remedial work - trimming and lobbing - will have to be carried out and a couple of trees will have to be removed. This work will commence later this week.

MAIN STREET EXHIBITION
Portlaoise Library has compiled an exhibition of old photographs of Main Street, Portlaoise. The launch of ‘Main Street Down The Years’ on Thursday August 23 at 6pm. These are mainly drawn from the Eason, Scully and Redmond collections. The exhibition will be in the library for a month after the launch.
