LUNCHTIME CONCERT

Music while you lunch: Easy on the ear free lunchtime concert on Thursday, August 16 1.10pm-1.50pm at St Peter’s Church of Ireland Portlaoise, featuring Feis Cheoil winner Paul Mullen who is an organist of St. Patrick’s Church, Greystones, Co. Wicklow. Bring your lunch and eat while you listen. No charge, donations welcome (half of the proceeds go to Laois Hospice).

There will be two free lunchtime recitals at St Peter’s Church (COI), Market Square, Portlaoise during National Heritage Week. The first recital will take place on Tuesday, 21 August, 1.10pm-1.50pm and will feature Stanley Monkhouse on organ. Stanley had organs lessons with Andrew Seivewright at Carlisle Cathedral and Noel Rawsthorne at Liverpool Cathedral. He has been organist at churches in London, Nottingham and St Ann’s Dublin, and has given recitals in several English cathedrals. For many years he taught anatomy at the College of Surgeons in Dublin and is now the Rector of St. Peter’s COI Church, Portlaoise. He once won the Sawyer prize in the Associateship examination of the Royal College of Organists, and passed the Fellowship, but he thinks it’s doubtful that he would do either of things now.

Crossing of Ireland of the Statue of Our Lady of the hidden and mystical wounds: The statue will be in Portlaoise at the Shrine in the Market Square at 12 noon on Thursday 16th August.

CEMETERY MASS

THE HEATH CHURCH

Church of the Assumption the Heath: An examination of the trees at the outer boundary wall of the Heath cemetery has been undertaken. In the interest of safety, some remedial work - trimming and lobbing - will have to be carried out and a couple of trees will have to be removed. This work will commence later this week.

CUISLE CYCLE

A cycle challenge in aid of the Cuisle Centre in Portlaoise takes place on Sunday, August 19 next. SLIEVE BLOOM SLIDESHOW

TITANIC

Michael Moylan returns with his hugely popular interactive history show for kids. This year, experience a unique historical re-enactment of life on board the Titanic. Find out what it was really like to sail on the doomed ship. Booking is required. This takes place in Portlaoise Library on Thursday August 23 at 2pm.

TITANIC TALK

Tommy Millar And The Two Pennies: A Family Story Of The Titanic in Portlaoise Library on Wednesday August 22 at 6pm. Author and journalist Susie Millar tells how her great-grandfather came to be an engineer on the Titanic and what happened to him and his family in April 1912. Contact Library at 057 86 22333.

CEILI AND OLD TIME DANCING

MAIN STREET EXHIBITION

Portlaoise Library has compiled an exhibition of old photographs of Main Street, Portlaoise. The launch of ‘Main Street Down The Years’ on Thursday August 23 at 6pm. These are mainly drawn from the Eason, Scully and Redmond collections. The exhibition will be in the library for a month after the launch.

ILLUSTRATION WORKSHOP

SET DANCING
