LATE SYLVESTER LEWIS PHELAN

The death occurred in the loving care of the staff at the Midlands Regional Hospital, Portlaoise, of Sylvester Lewis Phelan, (Cork Road, Stradbally, Co. Laois and formerly Glenbower, Mountrath). In his 91st year, he is predeceased by his brother Denis and sister Josephine; sadly missed by his sisters Aileen Stapleton (Dublin) and Freda Winters (Cork), sister-in-law Anne, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Rest in peace. Funeral Mass took place last Friday morning at 11 o’c. at Church of the Sacred Heart, Stradbally and burial took place immediately afterwards to Oakvale Cemetery.

PARISH GAELS FUNDRAISER

Stradbally Parish Gaels are holding a Social Night in the Napper Tandy, Stradbally on Saturday, Sepember 8 commencing at 9pm sharp. Food and music on the night. Admission is 5 euros and your support would be much appreciated.

BUS TO CLONFERT

STEAM QUEEN

Congratulations to Emma Brady, who won this year’s Steam Queen at the Annual Steam Rally. Emma is granddaughter of Larry and Marie Keenan, Main Street, Stradbally.

MEALS ON WHEELS FUNDRAISER

Tickets are now on sale for the annual raffle which will take place in St. Joseph’s Hall, Stradbally on Saturday, August 25 commencing at 7pm. €700 in prizes. Your continued support would be much appreciated.

STEAM TRAIN

The train runs for 1km through the woodlands of Stradbally Hall Estate, Stradbally. It will be running on Sunday, August 26 from 1.30pm until 4.30pm. Contact Clifton Flewitt, Irish Steam Preservation Society Limited at 01-8554081 for more information.

HERITAGE LECTURE

STORY OF STRADBALLY 1828

A talk on the historical novel ‘The Manor of Glenmore’ showing life in Stradbally 1828, organised by the Laois Heritage Society takes place on Thursday, August 23 in the Arthouse, Stradbally commencing at 8pm. Contact Julie Shead at 057 8641773 for more details.

IRISH HISTORY LIVE: TITANIC

Michael Moylan returns with his hugely popular interactive history show for kids. This year, experience a unique historical re-enactment of life on the board the Titanic. Booking is required. This takes place in Stradbally Library and Arthouse on Thursday, August 23 commencing at 4pm.

BENEFIT NIGHT

A benefit night in aid of the Make A Wish Foundation will be held in the Napper Tandy back lounge, Stradbally on Saturday, August 25 commencing at 7pm to close.

Live music featuring the Abbey Folk, Shawn Mullins, Chris Conroy, DJ Sean Savage. Spot prizes and finger food and admission is only €5.

WHIST DRIVE

Next Whist Drive will be held on Friday, August 17 commencing at 8.30pm sharp. Thank you to all our supporters, new and old.

ELECTRIC PICNIC

The Electric Picnic committee will now accept written requests for funding from local charities, clubs and associations to reach the Secretary on or before Friday, August 24. Detailed letters to Carmel Dillon, 10 Church Avenue, Stradbally.

The lucky winners of tickets can collect their tickets on Friday, August 17 between 7.30pm and 9 pm and on Saturday, August 18 from 10.30am until 12 noon. Tickets are priced at €30 euros each - €60 euros to be paid on collection for two. This includes the €10 (per ticket) donation for charity - no payment on entry to the Electric Picnic this year.

Stradbally seniors lost out to Timahoe in their first round of the senior football championships played in Portlaoise on Friday evening last.

Corrig Kids Playschool will open Monday to Friday 9.00am to 12.30pm, First Day School Wednesday August 29 and Thursday August 30. Closed August 31 and September 3 due to Electric Picnic. Re-open Tuesday September 4.
