FUTSAL SOCCER TOURNAMENT

Mountmellick United Football Club is holding the above on Saturdays March 16, 23 and 30 from 3pm to 7pm in the sports complex. There will be 7 players per team at €10 per person. SEACHTAIN NA GAEILGE

To celebrate St Patrick’s Day and Seachtain na Gaeilge, a bilingual story time with puppets by Mairéad Ni Chodlatain and Sharon McEvoy will take place on Thursday, March 14 from 4pm to 4.30pm in the library. To book a place, contact 057 8644572.

DRUGS AWARENESS TALK

A drugs information and awareness talk for parents by Detective Scully of Portlaoise Drugs Unit will take place in Mountmellick Community School on Wednesday, March 13 at 7.30pm. This informative talk will cover recognising drug taking, knowing the signs, how to recognise various drugs etc. It is a free talk for parents of all school going children, both primary and secondary level.

DRAMA FESTIVAL

The drama festival continues until Friday, March 15 at 8pm nightly in the arts centre.

Tuesday, March 12: Moyne Drama Group presents Sive by J B Keane. Wednesday March 13: Thurles Drama Group presents All My Sons by Arthur Miller. Thursday March 14: Prosperous Dramatic Society present The Goat, Or Who Is Sylvia by Edward Albee (over 16s). Friday March 15: Camross Drama Group from Wexford presents The Loves of Cass Maguire by Brian Friel.

COMHALTAS

Thank you for your support during our recent church gate collection. Well done to all the musicians who played in the Credit Union Offices for the drama festival launch and on Saturday, March 9 before the drama. We also play on Wednesday March 13 from 7.15pm to 8pm before the play starts on the night. We will also play at Mass on St Patrick’s Day at 9am. Remember our annual concert is on Friday March 22 starting at 7.30pm. All welcome to join in the reading of children’s books in Irish during Seachtain na Gaeilge in the Library at 4pm on Thursday March 14.

COMMUNITY GAMES

Well done to the children who took part in the recent county art final. Results will be out in the next few weeks. Well done also to those who took part in the county quiz final which took place in O’Dempsey’s GAA hall recently. The date for the talent county final is now Saturday March 23 starting at noon. Note this change of date. Any further information required phone 085 713 8940. The county swimming finals take place at Portlaoise Pool on Saturday March 30 from 10am to noon.

CRAFTS FAIR

A crafts fair of local produce will be held in O’Connell Square on St Patrick’s Day from 12pm to 5pm.

IMPORTANT NOTICE - O’CONNELL SQUARE

Please note that O’Connell Square will close to cars on Saturday March 16 from 7pm to facilitate with St Patrick’s Day festivities. The square will re-open on Sunday March 17 at 7pm.

ST PATRICK’S DAY PARADE

The parade will start at 2pm sharp from The Harbour with assembly from 1.30pm. This year interested all groups are asked register their intent to enter the parade by texting PARADE followed by your name and group to 087 2726525 and/or 087 7927297. There will be cash prizes for best float and best entry.There will be live music in O’Connell Square from 1pm from local bands and entertainers along with bouncy castles, Bumble Bus and face painting for children. Children’s competitions will be held in O’Connell Square at 3.30pm including fancy dress for primary school children and a bonny baby competition. Please come out and take part in the parade and make it a day to remember.

Accordian band apologies

St Joseph’s Accordian Band Portlaoise will be unable to take part in the Mountmellick St Patrick’s Day Parade, due to the Portlaoise parade taking place at the same time.

To date the band have taken part in all the St Patrick’s Day parades in Mountmellick and would like to thank the residents and businesses for their continued support throughout the year.

As a token the band will play after Mass in a couple of weeks.

CARER’S ASSOCIATION

Coming up to St Patrick’s day Sarsfields LFC will be selling green ribbons for the Carer’s Association. Ribbons are €2 each and your support would be appreciated. Funds raised in Laois will be used for the Carer’s Association in the county. Why not join in wearing the green and support a good cause

MISSION ALIVE COLLECTION

The annual Mission Alive church gate collection will be held on Saturday and Sunday March 16 and 17 in Mountmellick and Clonaghadoo. The money collected will be sent directly to the orphan project in Lusaka in Zambia. Many thanks from the group to all who have contributed to this project over the years. The group sent €5,000 to the orphan project in December.

PTAA

The AGM was held on Monday February 11 and officers elected were: chairperson John Dowling, vice chairperson Michael Lawlor, secretary Sabrina Dempsey, PRO Sabrina Dempsey, treasurer Sheila Kearney, vice treasurer Leon De Barra and Spiritual Director Fr Mícheál Murphy.

The committee sincerely thanks Fr Mícheál Murphy for his involvement as spiritual director in the organisation and in particular for his work regarding Temperance Sunday which fell on Sunday February 10.

The mid Leinster quiz will take place on Sunday March 24 in Mountmellick ICA hall at 2pm, all competing are very welcome.

Committee meetings take place on the second Monday of each month at 8pm in ICA Hall, all welcome including any new members who wish to join.

Votes of sympathy were passed with the families of Pat Bowe, Evelyn Dillon, Alice Dempsey, Ned Dunne, Peg Ryan, Betty Tuohy and Mrs McCormack.

LIBRARY

The knitting circle meets each Tuesday morning from 10.30am to noon. Bring along your knitting needles and join us for a cuppa and a chat. Our adult crossword club will meet on Thursday March 21 at 11am. All are welcome. Internet, printing, scanning and photocopying services are available in the library.

ACTIVE RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION

On Wednesday March 13 the new Active Retirement Walking & Activities Group will assemble at the MDA at 10.30am for a short walk. Please wear high visibility jackets.

On St.Patrick’s day we hope that many of our members will assemble at 1.30pm and walk together in the parade wearing as much green as possible.

On Wednesday March 20 at 10.30am in the MDA we will have a fun fashion show showing many of the beautiful clothes from the Hospice Charity Shop in the town. On Wednesday March 27 the Walking & Activities Group meet again at the MDA at 10.30am for a walk.

The annual membership fee is now due. Please note that new members are welcome to join the club at any time throughout the year.

Weekly activities for members are: Boccia in the Macra Hall, aqua aerobics in Portlaoise Leisure Centre, dancing with Maureen Culleton and music and song in St Vincent’s Hospital.

JUVENILE GAA

Juvenile hurling training takes place each Monday evening in the sports complex at the following times: 6.30pm to 7.30pm for u8 and 7.30pm to 8.30pm for u10 and u12.

U8 football training takes place in the sports complex every Friday at 6pm. All new players are welcome to attend.

LAOIS MARTIAL ART

Kickboxing and Taekwondo classes for juniors, seniors and adults are held in Mountmellick and Portlaoise on Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday. Ladies classes are now also available. There is a full matted professional gym including punch bags and boxing ring. Classes are taught by a 4th degree National Champion. Contact 087 2768843.

Laois Cycling & Touring club are inviting you to join them for their weekly beginner’s cycle on Sunday mornings from the Maldron Hotel Portlaoise, meeting at 8.50am for 9am start.
