Castle Durrow - Nixers in the 17th Century is the name of a talk by Shelly Stokes, owner of Castle Durrow Hotel in Portlaoise Library on Tuesday, July 6 at 8pm. The free event, which focuses on the house’s history and its change to hotel, is part Celebration of Architectures series in the library on the big houses of Laois.

Woodenbridge Juvenile regatta

The Woodenbridge Paddlers will hold their annual Juvenile Regatta on Sunday 18th July with competition hor all age groups. For more contact 0872395357.


The parish lotto with a jackpot of 9,050 euro was not won, small winners were 30 euro Shane Walsh, 25 euro Peter Monnelly, 20 euro Ruby Holohan. The lotto will be in the Dec’s Bar, on August Bank Holiday Tuesday with a possible jackpot of 9,350 euro. Tickets must be handed in before 9.30 pm on the night of the draw to be included in that jackpot.

5km fun walk/run

The annual fundraiser for Vita, Friends of Fr Doheny will take place on Friday, August 9. All abilities and ages welcome for 5km route in Ballyouskill. Entry €5 per person. Spot prizes, entertainment and refreshments on the night. All support greatly appreciated for this local charity, working towards ending poverty by increasing the sustainability of people’s lives in Ethiopa.


Work Nights continue every Thursday evening at 7pm. We ask all residents to please come out for one hour in their own areas. A lot can be done with your help. Please help ensure that the town is clean and tidy over the festival time as judging is still on-going in the Litter League and in the Tidy Towns Competition. We want Durrow to be spic and span for the festival visitors!


On Saturday,July 6 the Lions held their Annual BBQ and Awards Ceremony. Player of the year awards were given out to the following: U17 - Brian Kavanagh; U13 - Gary O’Sullivan; U13 G - Arriana Mezzapello; U12 - Daire Quinn; U11 - James Duggan. The FAI Summer Soccer School at Lions AFC: This years SSS was our biggest ever with 95 boys and girls between the ages of 6 and14 attending from the 8th to 12th of July. It was an extremely enjoyable week for the children who made lots of new friends. The 5 coaches this year were all Lions members who were trained by the FAI. It couldn’t have went better and the weather was glorious.

For the coming season 2013/14 we hope to enter the following teams: U8, U9, U10, U11, U12, U13 and U14 boys. U12 and U14 girls. This will depend on each team having two managers. With judging ongoing in the Tidy Towns Competition, all are asked to make a special effort over the coming weeks with Friday evenings designated as ‘Clean Up Sessions’. All help would be greatly appreciated each Friday evening – to meet at 7.30 pm at the Community Centre


The GAA club are holding their annual race night on Friday August 16 this is one of the major fund raisers of the year for the club so please come out and show your support.

Well done to our Junior hurlers on defeating Clough/Ballacolla in the first round of the championship on Tuesday last they now take on Clonad in the quarter final next Tuesday best of look to all involved.

Senior hurlers are also out this Saturday in the first round of the championship where they take on Kilcotton/Borris in o Moore park at 6 pm, best of look to all involved.
