Rosenallis Community Alert have launched a Text Alert scheme because of concerns over crime and bogus callers in the area.
A large crowd attended the recent launch in the Community Centre, with speakers Conor O’Leary of Muintir na Tíre and Sergeant Justine Reilly, and Bernie Dunne from Task.
Chairman Tom Joyce said people in the area were concerned about crime, vulnerability and security.
“This led to the setting up of the committee and a lot of hard work has been done in a short period,” he said.
Conor O’Leary is Community Alert Officer with Muintir na Tíre. He told the audience of new ideas such as a Bogus Caller Card, to help homeowners check details of callers before opening the door.
“Community Alert is about looking out for each other, about neighbourliness, and particularly about caring for the older and more vunerable in our community,” he said.
Sergeant Justine O’Reilly asked people to call 057 86 71000 to report anything suspicious.
“Everyone should take the responsibility to contact the Gardaí and not hope others will do so. The Gardaí will process the information and based on their findings they will notify the distribution company who will send out the text to all on our system,” she said.
She advised on closing windows and gates if going out, put on alarms, guard sheds, and use covert markings on machinery and belongings.
“Be mindful of unknown tradespeople calling, be it someone cleaning gutters or someone installing water meters and so on. Always phone to check out callers. Always close the door while making that call. Get reputable people to do jobs. And if the price for something is too good to be true, it is,” she said.
