The St Joseph’s Sunday Choir will launch a new CD of 12 hymns on Thursday December 11 at 8pm in the Community Arts Centre. CD cost is €10. All profits to the Cuisle Centre for cancer support. A great Christmas gift. Organist and choir director is Audrey Whelan.


The annual flag days are on Friday and Saturday December 5 & 6. These will again enable the committee to give fuel to the senior citizens in Mountmellick for Christmas.


St Vincent de Paul Holy Family Conference Mountmellick is holding its annual church gate collection at all masses on Saturday and Sunday December 6 & 7.  Please give generously and help those in our parish who are in need during these difficult times. 


The annual Mission Alive table quiz takes place in the Druid Bar on Thursday December 4 at 9.30 p.m. Tables of four €20. Michael Linehan is quiz master. Proceeds will go to the AIDS/ HIV Orphan project in Lusaka in Zambia. Donations of raffle prizes would be most appreciated. We hope all our supporters will come out to join us for the 2014 quiz.

A stakeholder meeting for the William Edmundson & Friends Gathering July 2015 will be held on Thursday December 4 in the Arts Centre, 7.30pm to 9pm. There will be a strong emphasis on promoting Mountmellick and ‘traditional Ireland’ during this 5 day event, with over 80 visitors from overseas. The WWI Commemoration group will launch a DVD ‘Mountmellick Remembers’ in the Balcony Theatre at 8pm on Saturday December 6, featuring the commemorations of WWI in Mountmellick including the concert, ecumenical service, exhibition and unveiling of the monument. Refreshments served, all welcome.

SCOUT news

Mountmellick Scouts will soon have their calendar for 2015 on sale.

The club hosted the Slieve Bloom County Youth Forum on November 21 & 22 which was very well attended by scouts, ventures and rovers to support their members who were putting themselves forward for election. A speech had to be prepared by each candidate outlining why they wanted to be a county representative and represent the views of youth members at county, provincial and national level. Adam Bracken won the nomination to represent Scouts and Kostya Syomushkin will represent the Venture Scouts from Mountmellick.

The group also hosted the SB County Cub Challenge on Sunday November 23 in Garryhinch Woods , well done to all who took part.


Practice is held on Monday nights at 8.45pm and Wednesday nights at 8.30pm in the Macra hall. New members contact Trevor 087 9143226.


Well done to all the Rosenallis members who took part in the Scór na n-Óg recently in Mountmellick. Singers and musicians did very well. Best of luck in the All-Ireland to the quiz team who won and will represent Rosenallis and Laois at the upcoming All Ireland Scór at City West.


Meeting is on Wednesday December 3 in the MDA. This is the last meeting before Christmas, with music, mince pies and raffle. The annual Christmas dinner dance is in O’Loughlin’s Hotel on Sunday night December 14, with bus leaving the square at 6.30pm. Free door prize and raffle prizes on the night. Confirm attendence by Wednesday December 10 at latest.

Yarn Bombing Mountmellick meets in the Methodist Hall on Tuesday nights at 7.30pm. All interested are invited along.

The children’s sewing group for ages 10 -12 meets on Dec 9 from 4-5pm. Learn to stitch, sew buttons and much more.


The Library Knitting group meets each Tuesday from 10.30 to 12.30pm. Just bring along your needles and wool and join us for a cuppa and a chat.


Artist Tom Joyce exhibits his oil paintings and sculptures in the gallery over Christmas.

Well done to all who entered our drawing and colouring competitions. Prizes were awarded during Library Ireland Week. Classes from eight local schools came to view their entries and participate in a drawing workshop.


Loom banding sessions continue every Saturday at the library from 11am to 12.30pm and on Thursdays from 4pm to 5pm. Call in and check out our folder of loom banding ideas for you to make. All welcome.


The library knitting/crochet group meet on Tuesdays from 10.30am to 12.30pm. Bring along your needles and wool and join for a cuppa and chat.

The annual Christmas party is on Tuesday December 16 in the Forum Hostel, Mountmellick. The Seisiun is a free event but parents are asked to bring refreshments.  Mountmellick Comhaltas has been very visible in the last week. On Friday night there was a good turnout of musicians to entertain the crowd at the Laois GAA Awards, to huge appreciation. On Thursday they played at the Dunnes Stores customer evening in the Kyle Centre. Next Saturday afternoon December 13 is a busking fundraiser in The Kyle Centre.
