The Community Alert Texting system is proving very effective in reducing crime in the local area. Anyone not already on the system and would like to join can sign up on Saturday, February 21 between 7.30 and 8.30pm in the FAS office Borris-in-Ossory (located beside the church).

Borris in Ossory ICA guild held its monthly meeting on Wednesday night February 4, presided over by Helen Browne. Votes of sympathy were passed with Margaret Jestin on the death of her sister in law, the late Betty Jestin, who died in New Zealand and with Ursula Murray on the death of her niece, the late Niamh Hickey, Rathdowney. The guild will enter two teams in the Federation Table Quiz in Castletown on Wednesday February 25. Members were reminded of upcoming events including the Federation dinner which takes place in the Abbeyleix Manor Hotel on Friday April 10 and the National ICA AGM which takes place in the Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise on Saturday May 23. The meeting was also informed about Election Rallies where the four Presidential candidates will be introduced to the members. The two rallies in the South and East Region are on Friday 13th March in the Lord Bagenal Hotel, Leighlinbridge, Carlow at 8pm and Saturday 14th March in the Kilmurray Lodge Hotel, Limerick at 2pm.

A discussion took place on the guild’s annual holiday and suggested destinations included Scotland and the English Lake District. A final decision will be made at the next meeting in March.

A demonstration on making handmade Christmas cards and re-cycling old cards was given by Helen Kavanagh. The competition was won by Pat Kelly, 2nd Mary Sheeran, 3rd Helen Kavanagh and the raffle winners were Mary Teehan and Margaret Shortiss. The overall competition winner for 2014 was Noreen Whelan and she was presented with the Perpetual silver salver. The next guild meeting will take place on Wednesday March 4 at 8pm.

The Pilates class will continue on this Wednesday night February 11 at 8pm.


Sympathy is extended to all the Moore families in the locality, on the death of Mrs Lucy Quinn (née Moore), Navan Road, Dublin. Her Funeral Mass took place on Friday morning January 30 in the Church of Our Lady Help of Christians, Navan Road, followed by burial in Castleknock Churchyard. She is deeply regretted by her daughter Annette and son Fergal, extended family and friends.

The late Lucy was sister of the late Mick Moore, Derrin, Borris-in-Ossory, the late Jimmy Moore, Skeirke, Borris-in-Ossory and the late John Moore, Moneymore, Borris-in-Ossory.


The annual parish Senior Citizens Party, organised by Borris-In-Ossory Social Services will be held on Sunday, February 15 in the PE Hall at St Joseph’s National School, Borris-In-Ossory. The party will start at 12.30pm with lunch being served at 1pm and this will be followed by music, song and dance. All Senior Citizens in the parish are invited to this party.


The first Gardening get together of the New Year will be held on Thursday, Febraury 12 at 8pm where they will be preparing for the Spring in the garden. Now is the time to start seeds to plant out later when the ground warms up. Everyone is most welcome so come along.


Social dancing for fun with Maureen Culleton takes place each Thursday afternoon in St Canice’s Hall, Borris in Ossory from 2.30pm-4pm. All are welcome.
