TOASTMASTERS

Portlaoise Toastmasters held their Club Contests on Monday and the judges declared that a very high standard was achieved by all the contestants. Chairing the international speech contest was Mark Bastow, who introduced the speakers Mary White, Mary Heaney, Ann Duncan and Bryan Holland. In a very close contest Mary Heaney and Bryan Holland emerged as winners and will go on to represent the club on March 12. The evaluation contest followed and this was chaired by resident, Orlagh McCrory, She welcomed the guest speaker, Mary Ledwidge, from the Athy club, who was delivering the test speech. Mary enthralled the audience with her tale of The Red Jumper, an amusing account of a birthday she celebrated during her schooldays and the perils of wearing bright colours when you wish to remain unnoticed. The contestants Kevin Langan, Meree O’Sullivan and Mark Bastow gave excellent evaluations of this speech and both Meree and Mark will go forward to the finals. Portlaoise has the honour of hosting this competition on Monday, March 12 at 8pm in the Killeshin Hotel and teams from Carlow and Kilkenny will also be competing. This is a great showcase of Toastmasters’ skills and should prove an excellent night’s entertainment. Entry costs €10 with refreshments provided. Come along and enjoy the contest.

Condolences to the family of the late Margaret (Greta) Dollard, (née Conroy) of St Brigid’s Place, Portlaoise who passed away at the Midlands Regional Hospital Portlaoise on Saturday, February 25. Beloved wife of the late Paddy (recently deceased) and loving mother to Imelda, Eugene, and Brian. Deeply regretted by her loving family brothers, sisters extended family, relatives and friends. Reposed at the hospital chapel with removal last Wednesday to SS Peter and Paul’s church for requiem mass and interment afterwards in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery.

Condolences to the family of the late Jim Whelan of Belleville, New Jersey, USA and formerly of Clonad, Portlaoise who passed away peacefully in his 90th year on Friday, February 24. Brother of the late Winnie, Jer and Joe and uncle to Paddy Whelan (Clonad) Jim is deeply regretted by his loving sons, daughters, grandchildren, extended family and friends. Funeral mass last Tuesday in St Peter’s Church, Belleville, followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery. Memorial mass to commemorate his long and distinguished life was celebrated on Monday, March 5 in St Fintan’s Church, Raheen.

AGM of Laois branch of Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind will take place on Monday March 12 at the parish centre, Portlaoise at 8.15pm. Padraig Mallon, CEO of Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind will be attending and will give a presentation on the work of this worthy charity.
