A big crowd gathered in the O’Dempseys clubhouse on Friday December 7 for St Conleth’s annual awards night. There was a busy schedule on the night with medals to be presented to the U10, U12, U14 and U16 teams. In his address, chairperson Tommy Hoey thanked all those who helped with teams during the year, while pointing out that additional volunteers were needed to help out in the coming year. We then had a very enjoyable audio-visual review of the year, expertly presented as usual by Peter Doyle. The club was delighted to welcome along Aisling Kehoe from the Laois ladies senior team to present the medals to each of the teams. Aisling also had some good words of advice for the girls, encouraging them to keep with the football and to keep working at their skills. Probably the biggest cheer of the night greeted the announcement of Liz Waldron as the winner of the St Conleths Club Person of the Year Award. Once all the medals were presented it was time for refreshments with plenty of cakes and sandwiches provided by parents to complement the delicious hot food supplied by Caroline Costello. After that the girls (and some parents) took to the floor to disco the rest of the night away.
St Michaels AC
Well done to St Michaels AC athlete Eva Galvin who secured an All Ireland medal at the National Cross Country Championships in Adamstown recently. The St Michaels AC juveniles were represented with only our U15 girls Eva Galvin, Naomi Luttrell, Kayleigh Woods, Leah Cooney, Katie Piggott and Orla Mullally.
Eva Galvin had a great day coming home 20th out of a field of 122 athletes, and so helped Leinster bring home a national silver medal. Well done to Eva on a great run and excellent performance on the day, including her St Michael’s team mates who all ran well on the day. Well done also to John Fenlon who competed in the men’s novice event at the national finals in Adamstown. It was with deep regret that the people of the town heard of the death of Peg O’Connor, Bracklone Street on Wednesday December 5 at Naas General hospital.
Peg was born on February 15, 1925 in Rossa Place Nenagh to Christopher and Ellen Bourke. After losing her mother and father, Peg came at the age of 13 to live with her grandparents Douglas. She will be well known to all for her many years working in Goodwin’s, Main St.
Predeceased by her husband Joe O’Connor in November 1957, she went on to rear her young children Dick and Geraldine. The biggest blow came six years ago on July 30, 2006 when her beloved daughter Geraldine passed away suddenly. Peg was involved in many voluntary groups in the town, including the ICA, the swimming pool association, the building of the community centre, the pioneer association, the bereavement group, St Michael’s choir and many more groups.
Requiem mass took place on Saturday December 8 at St Michael’s Church, with burial after in St John’s Cemetery Killenard. Rest in peace Peg.
