With the national tidy towns judging in full swing everyone is asked to do their “bit” in insuring that our town is looking it’s best when the judges come around. Please check for litter outside your patch and make sure there is no weeds or dirt on the footpaths. Thanks to everyone who put out window boxes, hanging baskets and tubs, they all really add to the town. With large crowds expected for the festival and the gathering it is of utmost importance that we show off Durrow in a great light. Thank you for all your support and work so far, please continue until end of august.
Things are really hotting up for this year’s festival which promises to be the biggest and best yet. DDF with the valued assistance of additional volunteers have been busy making over 100 scarecrows for this year’s exhibition. The festival is currently featuring in advertisement for The Gathering on national radio and was included in the best fun festivals for 2013 in the Irish Times last week.
We are expecting the attendance this year to be well up on previous years and are really excited about the prospect of showcasing Durrow to a new audience. The programme of events is available on www.durrow.ie and brochures will be available locally next week.
Please remember that you have to book the workshops in advance....so don’t delay. This year we have included ‘Teenzone’ which includes specially selected workshops for teenagers. They also need to be booked and we expect interest to be very high so book early. The closing date for registration of the summer camp is next Friday 19th July.
Payment must be made in full to secure the place and under no circumstances will children who have not been pre-registered be accepted on the first morning. Entry forms for the All Ireland Scarecrow Championships are currently being accepted and you can also enter online at www.durrow.ie. €1,000 is up for grabs again this year for the overall winner! The best place to keep up to date with festival events and happenings is on our facebook page www.facebook.com/durrowscarecrowfestival
But most of all right now we need your help. DDF are a small voluntary committee with a huge task ahead of them over the next few weeks. The operation of the festival itself is only half the task. A huge amount of work is required to get Durrow ready for the festival. Previous shout-outs for assistance on the newspaper, in the newsletter and on our facebook have yielded little results and time is very much against us now.
We want to hold the best festival Durrow has ever seen but we cannot do that without the help of the community. Please please give us a couple of hours of your time. We particularly need the assistance of the men of Durrow as a lot of the work over the next two weeks is physical in nature. Please call Marian on 086 8390266 if you can help. If you cannot commit to a time, and you see us out working, just join in. Many hands make light work.
The Woodenbridge Paddlers will hold their annual sponsored charity event in mid August. This years will will thaverse the Boston - New York route.
Durrow/Abbeyleix Macra have been busy over the past few weeks, taking part in such competitions as farm skills, stock judging, tag rugby, set dancing and Gaelic football. Anyone interested contact Joe on 0857665838.
