The 2013 Slievebloom Storytelling Festival takes place from Thursday 10th to Saturday 12th October. This years special guests are Paddy O’Brien from Cork and Jack Lynch from Dublin. Shows start at 8pm each night: Thursday 10th Roundwood House (Mountrath); Friday 11th Leap Castle; Saturday 12th Leap Castle. Each night’s show will also include some singers and musicians. There was no winner of this weeks jackpot which was €9,250.The numbers drawn were 13, 14, 16, 18. RATHDOWNEY GIRL GUIDE UNITS
The Rathdowney Brownies, Guides and Young Leader Units will be holding their registration night on Friday 27th Sept. 7p.m. to 8p.m. in the Marian Centre. New members are welcome. Parents wishing to enroll their daughter in the Ladybird unit can contact Patricia at 087 9741420.
A great Bingo is held every Tuesday Night at 8.30 in the Rathdowney Community Centre. Your support would be greatly appreciated. Bingo is run by the Community Centre Group.
Now is the time, if you have been thinking of coming along, as it is open every Thursday morning from 10am to 12 noon at the old Convent School. The hospitality room is now completed. It is a great opportunity for all men to come together to share their skills and talents, learn new ones or simply meet for a chat and a cuppa. New members welcome every week.
The 29th Annual Rathdowney Review magazine is currently being compiled and will be in the shops around the first week of December 2013. As in previous years we depend on the public to submit items of interest such as Births Deaths and Marriages, Graduations, Anniversaries, Sporting Achievements, Down Memory Lane, Family Profiles or other topics of interest in Rathdowney and surrounds. Please arrange for your photo or article to reach either Maureen Guilfoyle, Betty O’Brien or Niall O’Doherty as soon as possible. If you need more time to prepare your article, don’t panic. There is still plenty of time to the deadline which is the last week of October. But please don’t leave everything until the last minute. Has started back after the summer break, meeting Friday morning from 10am-12pm in the Marian Centre. Cost €3 per meeting. All welcome.
A number of free events will take place in Rathdowney as part of Laois Connects Mental Health Week.
Enhancing men’s mental health
On Thursday, October 3, a free workshop will take place in Rathdowney Men’s Shed from 10am-12.30pm focusing on issues for men as part of Laois Connects. There is no charge for this event and pre-booking is not necessary. The workshop will be facilitated by Finola Colgan, Mental Health Ireland. Also on Thursday, October 3, a teenage zumba class will take place in the Parochial Hall from 7pm-8.30pm. The class will encourage teenage fitness and fun to increase self confidence and positive body image.
Coping with loss
On Saturday, October 5 a workshop on coping with loss will take place in Marian Hall from 10am-1pm. Brian Johnston, a psychotherapist, will present an approach that can help us heal the pain of loss and bereavement.
