An in school Spelling bee competition was run between the four 6th classes in Scoil Bhride recently. #
After four days of competition eight students got through to the final with Ciara Phelan qualifying as the winner.
Ciara then went on to represent Scoil Bhride, Portlaoise in the county Laois round of the competition which was held in St Paul’s school on March 13. There were seven schools participating in total.
The competition began with practice rounds to familiarise the children with how the competition was run in front of an audience. Ciara flew through the first few rounds with ease while other competitors got knocked out.
Eventually there were only two competitors, Ciara included. Sudden death occurred between the two in a gripping finale with Ciara emerging as the winner spelling “Unconscious” as her winning word. Ciara now goes on to represent Laois in the Leinster round of the competition in June 2012.
The Leinster round of the competition will be aired on 2FM on Tubridys show. The winner of this will then go through to the All- Ireland Spelling Bee final. This final will see the provincial winners compete on air with Tubridy to claim the title of All-Ireland Spelling Bee. The winners will also claim a new library for their school worth €7’500 euro.
Ciara was presented with a medal, certificate of performance, a book, and a €50 voucher for Eason’s for her victory. Easons supported the event.
Well done Ciara you have done Scoil Bhride proud.
