SOME 250 volunteers will take to the streets of Laois this Friday, April 27, for Special Olympics Ireland’s annual collection day.

Volunteers will be in Portlaoise, Abbeyleix, Mountrath and Portarlington to help raise funds for this important cause. This is the biggest annual fundraising event in the Special Olympics Ireland calendar and as such is hugely important to the organisation.

Every cent that is raised on the day will be used to ensure that Special Olympics Ireland can continue to realise its promise of offering people with an intellectual disability the opportunity to participate in sport in their local area.

Matt English, CEO Special Olympics Ireland said: “Over 3,500 volunteers will be out collecting in 200 collection points in cities, towns and villages throughout Ireland. Laois will be no exception with over 250 of volunteers signed up to collect on the day. We are asking people to give what they can on the day in support of our programme of sports training and competition for people with an intellectual disability. All donations will be greatly appreciated”.

Eircom is sponsoring the event and to keep up to date on what is happening in Laois on the day, people can visit the website, www.specialolympics.ie/collectionday.
