Irish Wildlife Trust Conservation Work Party - Marian Hill Portarlington (Just off Edenderry Rd - R419, take first left after bridge), Laois/Offaly border, Saturday November 29, 10.30am meeting at site.

Help with the habitat management on this new community nature reserve, tea and biscuits supplied.

Hairspray

Colaiste Iosagain presents the Musical Hairspray on Wednesday December 10 to December 12 commencing at 8pm in the school. Admission, adults €10, child €5. For more details contact 057 8623407.

CAROL SINGING

If you are interested in joining our carol singing group in Portarlington this Christmas please contact Anne Dunne on 087 4146600. Young and old are welcome. Practice will commence very soon.

Bereavement Mass

Mass for all who were bereaved during the year will be celebrated as followed: Friday November 21 in St Michael’s Church at 7.30pm. St Paul’s Church Emo on Saturday November 22 at 7.30pm.

Cemetery Committee

Portarlington Unity & Cemetery committee would like to thank all the people of Portarlington and surrounding areas and visitors for their generous contributions towards the upkeep of St Michael’s Cemetery. Thanks also to those who helped with the collection on the day.

A Touch of Pink

The Orchard Hotel raised €800 for a Touch of Pink in line with paint it pink for the Irish Cancer Society.  

Thanks to all who attended on the night and also thanks to our sponsors for all the great gifts for our night.

Dancing

Dancing continues every Monday night in The Gandon Inn, Emo till midnight in aid of Portarlington St Vincent de Paul.

Dance night on next Friday November 21 will be an extra fundraiser for St Vincent de Paul with raffle tickets on sale for large Christmas cake, and dancing to Done & Dusted.

Come along for a great night out. Admission €5. All welcome.

LAOIS MABS

The Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS) is a free, confidential and non-judgemental service for people in debt or at risk of getting into debt in Ireland. Laois MABS is starting a drop in service on Friday November 28 from 9.30am – 1pm in the Portarlington Community Centre. No appointment necessary.

This service will run on the last Friday of each month. For further information please ring 0761 072620.

Tidy Towns

Portarlington Tidy Towns committee would like to thank everyone for their generosity during our recent flag days.

Photo Exhibition

Mountmellick Camera Club are having their annual exhibition on November 21 at 8pm in Mountmellick Community School, and again on Sunday November 23 from 2pm until 6pm. All are welcome.

This is the 25th year of the club and the Laois Rose Teresa Brennan will be opening the exhibition.

With no less than seven members from Portarlington with work on show it has to be worth a visit to enjoy the images and to see the high standard of photography from the club

Toastmasters Club

Portarlington Speakers next meeting at the Anvil Inn at 7.45pm on Tuesday November 18 will play host to visitors from Toastmaster Clubs in Kildare, Portlaoise and Carlow.

As a member of Toastmaster International the Portarlington Speakers can give members the skill and confidence to effectively express themselves in any situation. Whether they are a professional, a student, stay-at-home parent or retiree the club is the most efficient, enjoyable and affordable way of gaining great communication skills.

All are welcome, admission is free for the first three meetings, and there is no pressure to join. It is a great way to meet new friends and engage in an enjoyable evening where self-development and entertainment go hand in hand.

World War I VISIT

If anyone is interested in the history of the First World War or lost relatives in the conflict, a trip to the Western Front war graves takes place in April next year. Dates to be finalised.

Heritage Society

Laois Heritage Society Lecture Series autumn/winter meetings take place at The Portlaoise Heritage Hotel. Free admission to all lectures and all are welcome.

November 20, 8.30pm: ‘How Laois Won the All-Ireland Hurling Championship of 1915’ by Paul Rouse.

December 11 8.30pm: ‘Music in Maryborough 1900 – 1950’ by John Dunne.
