It was with deep sadness that the town heard of the sudden death of Tom Cooper, Patrick St and formerly of Clonanny. Tom was predeceased by his loving wife Patricia (nee Nolan) 6 years ago. Also by his parents Chris and Bridget and his two brothers Jim and Christy. He will be sadly missed by his devoted family, his sons Tom Jnr, Noel, Sandy and Paul. His daughters Yvonne, Shirley and Wendy. His grandchildren and his brothers Pat and Martin and sisters Mary and Anne. His large extended family and many friends.
Tom worked for many years as a lorry driver with Butlers/Siac, and when his wife Pat started her flower shop in Mountmellick, Tom worked beside her, and helped her with the business and also doing some shoe repairs. After Pat’s death he continued with his daughter Yvonne who took over the shop after her mam’s death. Tom had a great passion for music. Requiem mass took place on Thursday June 28 at St Michael’s Church, with burial after in St Michael’s Cemetery. May Tom rest in peace.
DEAR GRACE AWARDS ‘Dear Grace’ is a writing competition for 5th /6th class pupils from all over Ireland. The Dear Grace Foundation was founded 9 years ago by Michael and June Nolan following the death of their daughter Grace in 1999 from Osler-Weber Rendu Syndrome. On Thursday May 2, girls from 6th class in Presentation Primary School Portarlington, accompanied by their teachers Ms Dunne and Ms Behan, travelled to the Helix in DCU for the ‘Dear Grace’ awards.
Leah Sheridan from 6th class was one of the 34 recipients who received one of these awards. Brendan O’ Carroll compared the awards ceremony, while Leah was presented with her award by the cast of Mrs Brown’s Boys from RTE. It was very exciting for Leah and her class as they got to see many celebrities from stage and screen including Jedward, Brian Kennedy and Keith Duffy, who all support this very worthwhile charity. All in Presentation Primary School are very proud of Leah and her achievements.
A big well done to all involved in the organisation of last week’s events to remember Kieran McEvoy. The good weather was a bonus for the events that took place and the turnout was a testament to the wonderful person Kieran was, may he rest in peace.
