Ten towns cycle
South Laois Tourism in conjunction with Ossory Cycling Club will stage the 90k Mid Summer Cycle Challenge (10 towns tour) on Sunday 21st June. Starting from the Square Durrow at 10am with registration from 9.30am the tour continues through Cullahill, Rathdowney, Clough, Ballacolla, Ballinakill, Ballyouskill (where refreshments will be had in the Wheel Inn) Ballyragget, Lisdowney, Gathabawn and concludes back in Durrow. Fee 20euro, BBQ at finish in Decs Bar Durrow. A 20k Family cycle will also be held with a start time of 11am. This spin will leave the square Durrow and continue through Cullahill, the Five Cross roads to Supermac’s Junction 3 Ballacolla where refreshments will be provided before returning to Durrow via Harveys Cross and the Woodenbridge. This event which is part of National Bike Week is free of charge so come along and enjoy the day.
The Parish lotto with a jackpot of €2,050 euro was not won. Winner of €30, Lucy Alley, €25 Tom Woods and €20 Dan Deegan. The Lotto will be held on June 22 in Mark’s Bar, Durrow with a possible jackpot of €2,350.
With several robberies and attempted robberies in the Durrow area in the past week everyone is asked to be very diligent and very conscious of security at their homes and workplaces. Please keep a watch for strange movements in your locality, report to the Gardaí any suspicious vehicles and /or strangers and check on elderly neighbours.
DURROW TIDY TOWNS
All flower beds have been planted in the town area and the Welcome to Durrow signs and the flower pouches are on the lamp posts. We appeal to residents to help by watering any flowers on lamp posts or any flower beds near you. We also ask residents to put out hanging baskets and window boxes on your premises and help by keeping your area clean and litter free. Judging in the National Tidy Towns competition commenced on 1st June and it is important to have Durrow looking good when the judges call. We appreciate your continued help and support.
A Community Alert Group is currently being set up in the town area. Durrow Community Council Committee members are currently canvassing households in the area asking them to become members. They are handing out forms door to door and will answer any questions you may have to the best of their ability. Those forms need to be ready for our next meeting on Tuesday night next. An information meeting will then be organised and all households will get notificati. Senior Citizens Annual Outing: Arrangements are being made for this year’s outing which we hope will be September 05 2015. More details later.
This year’s festival is fast approaching and DDF are very excited about this year’s programme of events with lots of new additions including ‘Fittest Four’ and ‘Feirm Factor” as well as a big treat for the ladies! The brochure for this year’s festival is currently being designed by our printer and will be available online later this month. Please ensure that you have read this year’s entry guidelines and judging criteria ‘before’ starting to make your scarecrow. Leaflets explaining the criteria are available locally and information is also available on www.durrow.ie and on the Durrow Scarecrow Festival Facebook page. A huge amount of time and effort has been put in by the judges in recent months to ensure that the judging this year is the fairest, most equitable and consistent it has ever been.
An additional €300 up for grabs for the ‘Best Residential Community’ which will see estates and streets compete against each other. The Scarecrow annual summer camp will be held from July 27-31 in the Scarecrow Village - further info from Marie on 087 9800090.
Durrow/Cullohill Parish anglers are holding a Pike Fishing competition on Sunday June 14. On Sunday June 28 they are holding a Trout fishing competition for the Mick Monahan Memorial Cup. On Sunday July 12 they are holding another competition. All members will receive “text” message during the week of the competition with all details. On June 19 the club will be on “About Laois” on channel 191 to continue it look at the progress in Grantstown Lake Fishing and Walks.
