The Green Café takes place at O’Loughlins Hotel, Main St, Portlaoise on Thursday September 13 from 7pm to 9pm. All are welcome to along to discuss how we can take a positive look at a sustainable future, over a cup of coffee. The café is presented by Laois Environmental Action Forum (LEAF) with the support of Laois Partnership, and is free of charge.

UN Vets Remembrance Mass

On Sunday September 30 at 11.15am, a remembrance mass will be held in SS Peter and Paul’s Church Portlaoise for all deceased members of Post 27, the Laois branch of the Irish United Nations Veterans Association. IUNVA Post 27 invite all members and families to attend.

On Thursday, September 13, Music Generation and Laois School of Music is holding an open musical evening Portlaoise College from 6pm to 8pm. Come, hear and try harp, uilleann pipes, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, French horn), clarinet, saxophone and more. Children and adults of all ages welcome. Admission free, bring a friend. The evening will include performances by a brass quintet, an uilleann piper and a group of stampede drummers. There will also be a choral demonstration for schools and community groups who are interested in starting a choir or singing group.

Laois Hospice

Laois Hospice are looking for people to host coffee mornings or evenings on September 20. If you would like to be a host please contact Mary Delaney at 086 8157280 for supply of coffee. All money collected in Laois are spent on hospice services in Laois.

Walk for suicide prevention service

Next Monday, September 17, a major fundraising walk for Pieta House will reach Portlaoise where local fundraising events are planned.

Dubbed the Tomathon, Tom Moran of the Moran’s Red Cow Hotel is walking 240 km walk from Limerick to Dublin, along with family and supporters, aiming to raise €100,000. All day Monday, musical entertainment will be laid on for shoppers at Laois Shopping Centre, with bucket collections. That night at Peig’s Bar, more music is planned for the 50 walkers and local supporters, as they stay over in Portlaoise for a well deserved rest. Any local singers, musicians, walkers or volunteers interested in taking part can contact Joe Laffan at 085 7162978.


GROW, in conjunction with the Health Service Executive and Laois Partnership is running a 4 week course aimed at over 55s at the Respond Community Building Millcourt, Greenmill Lane, Portlaoise on Mondays, October 1,8,15, 22. The Community Games national finals took place in Athlone IT recently. St Mary’s P/L Community Games was represented by Oisin Fitzpatrick in the boys u/16 1500m, winning comfortably. He continued his excellent running winning bronze in the final on Sunday. In the girls u/16 4 x 100 Relay St Mary’s were represented by Anna Healy, Orlaith Phelan, Aoife Campion, Eimear Corri, Dayna Graham & Leah Mc Donald. The girls won their semi final on Saturday and won bronze on Sunday. They will be eligible to compete in this competition next year also.


The proceeds of the recent church gate collection in Portlaoise was €2,517.84, Ratheniska €147.41, The Heath €386.46. Many thanks to all the donors who contributed to this collection.

Condolences to the family of the late James ‘Jim Bob’ McEvoy of 32 Upper Beladd, Portlaoise who passed away suddenly on Thursday, September 6. Very deeply loved and cherished son of Ber and Séan and adored brother of Keith, deeply missed and loved by his grandfathers, Paddy and John, aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives, neighbours and a large circle of friends. Reposed at his home with removal to his residence Saturday morning to arrive at SS Peter and Paul’s Church for requiem mass. Burial afterwards in SS Peter and Paul’s Cemetery, Portlaoise.
