The Rock GAA Club in conjunction with Ballyfin AC is holding a 5 mile road race and 2 mile walk on Sunday June 23 at 11am with registration from 10am. Parking, changing rooms, shower facilities and post race refreshments will be available. Fully AAI permit approved and measured. The Barrow Rise Pastoral Area (Clonaslee, Killeigh, Mountmellick and Rosenallis parishes) are holding an ecumenical ceremony of prayer on Sunday June 23 at 7pm.

The ceremony starts with assembly on Killeigh village green, followed by an introduction to historical religious sites in the four parishes, prayer and reflection, introduction to the cloister of the old monastery, scripture and prayer at the Church of Ireland and a walk to St Patrick’s Church where there will be Benediction with the Blessed Sacrament. All welcome. Park in Catholic Church grounds.


The knitting club meets on Tuesday mornings in the library from 10.30am to noon. Come along for tea and a chat. New members welcome.

At the county fleadh in Stradbally, the u12, u15 and u18 Grupaí Cheoil did very well and will compete in the Leinster finals in Edenderry in July. Five winners in the Irish singing competition and in the comhrá competition are going to Leinster. The Branch extends sympathies to the family of past memberFionnuala McDermott, on their sad loss.


The Council meeting was held in ICA hall on June 10. The centre received its 13th Gradam Award on May 25, accepted by Sabrina Dempsey. Regional draw will be held at the meeting in Mountrath on July 3. Tickets on sale, stubs to be returned before end June. Matt Talbot Day in Knock is on July 21, those intending to go should call 8624610 or 8624337. Vetted Council members visited the schools hoping for a good return from confirmation children. There was much sadness at the death of Christina Shortall of 38 Harbour St at St Vincent’s Hospital on Wednesday June 5. A most kind and friendly person, Christina will be fondly remembered by all who knew her. Remains reposed at her residence until removal on Friday morning to St Joseph’s Church. Requiem mass was celebrated at noon with burial afterwards to St Joseph’s cemetery. Christina is mourned by her husband Jim, sons and daughters, family, relatives, neighbours and friends to whom the community extend sincere sympathy.
