Application forms for the 2013 Laois Community Forum Awards are now available. Entry deadline extended to Thursday, November 7 before 5pm. There are five categories in the group/clubs section while there is also an Unsung Hero Award. Application forms can be downloaded from www.laoiscommunityforum.ie.

Jigs & Reels

The committees of Portarlington Meals on Wheels and Portarlington Community Development Association would like to thank everyone who was involved in the very successful fundraiser in the Heritage Hotel Killenard on Sunday October 27. Thanks to Kara Burbage and her family for all the work she put in to training the 34 dancers for the occasion. Some of the dancers never danced before, and with Kara’s help did themselves proud on the night. A big thank you to everyone who supported the night, from all who bought tickets, to all who sponsored the dancers, to the Heritage Hotel for providing the venue. A big well done to Jane Cunningham and Willie Murphy (Supervalu) who won on the night, and they received €500 for the Coder Dojo club, who they had chosen as their Charity to dance for. The other dancers were also given a donation for the Charity they danced for. Well done everyone.

Charity Ball

A gala charity ball in aid of the Cuisle Centre Portlaoise takes place on Saturday November 16 in the Heritage Hotel Portlaoise. Admission €50. Tickets available from Sinead’s gifts. Contact Sinead at 057 8684696.


Deepest sympathy is extended to the family of BB (Bridget) Dobson (nee Horan) Romford Essex and late of Bracklone St and Marian Hill, who died on September 26 in Romford. BB is survived by her daughter Elaine, grandson Kieran, granddaughter Claire, Kierans wife Kirstie, her siblings Dora (Romford), Tommy (Essex), Kathleen (Donagher) Bishopswood, & Sean Marian Hill, her extended family and friends. BB was predeceased by her husband Fredrick, her parents Patrick & Dora, brothers Ned, Paddy and sisters Nancy and Peggy.

BBs ashes will be reposing at Maher’s Chapel of Rest on Saturday next November 9; with Rosary at 9pm. Burial of ashes will take place with her parents in St Michael’s Cemetery on Sunday 10 at 3pm, officiated by Fr Dooley PP. BB will be missed by all her neighbours and friends in Romford. Funeral mass took place in Romford, and was officiated by a family friend Fr Phillip. May BB rest in peace.

Mount Saint Anne’s Killenard

Our annual craft fair takes place on Sunday November 10 from 11am to 4pm. Come along and support local crafters while picking up a bargain. Raffle on the day. An ideal opportunity to view our beautifully renovated Centre. Free admission.

Lions Club Hunt

Portarlington Lions Club thank all who took part and helped in any way for this year’s most successful Hunt Chase. Amount raised for local Charities was almost €4,000. The event was a wonderful spectacle.

‘Try a Day’ in Portatlington GAA Centre Portarlington. Saturday afternoons from 4.30pm till 5.30pm. Girls and boys from 6yrs upwards are invited to come and play camogie or hurling. Men’s Shed

Fundraiser Dance

A fundraising dance will be held in The Gandon Inn, Emo on Friday November 29. Music by Unity. Dancing from 9 till 12. Local auctioneer Matt Dunne will conduct an auction on the night. All donations would be appreciated. Admission only €5. Raffle tickets are on sale at €2 each and can be got from any committee member or from our shop.
