Parish Priest gets news role in diocese

Portlaoise Parish Priest Monsignor John Byrne has been appointed as the new Vicar General for the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin.

Portlaoise Parish Priest Monsignor John Byrne has been appointed as the new Vicar General for the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin.

Bishop Denis Nulty made the announcement last Tuesday, March 18.

The Vicar General is appointed to assist the Bishop in the administration of the Diocese.

This new role as Vicar General is in addition to his present role as Parish Priest of Portlaoise, and Father Byrne said that he was quite happy to accept the position.

“I hope I can fulfill my role as the Vicar General to support Bishop Nulty, and also to support all of the priests in the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin,” he told the Leinster Express.

In announcing the appointment, Bishop Nulty paid tribute to the two retiring Vicar Generals, Msgr Tom Coonan and Msgr Brendan Byrne.

He thanked them for their service to the Diocese in their roles over the past number of years.
