It is the end of another busy school year and the cycle of purchasing new books and uniforms will start again over the summer in time for September. This can be an expensive time for families with lots of additional costs outside of uniforms and other school essentials.

Are people interested in donating their unwanted used school uniforms and unwanted second hand books? If so the parents council are holding an open afternoon in the CYMS Hall in Durrow on Saturday June 30 between 3pm to 5pm so people can drop in their supplies. If you have any old mobile phones or printer cartridges bring them along on the day also as they will directly benefit the school through the Jack & Jill Foundation. If you are interested in availing of second hand books or uniforms please text or ring the parents council number at 086 8898110. Please leave your name contact number, class, age and gender of pupil. A member of the council will be in contact to arrange collection.

The mobile unit of the Blood Transfusion Service will visit Durrow on Thursday June 28 in the Castle Arms Hotel Durrow from 5pm to 8.30pm. with over 3000 units of blood needed each week and with supplies on the low side during summer it is very important that we have a good clinic in Durrow. Anyone between the ages of 18 and 70 years can give blood and it only takes less than one hour from start to finish.


Local man Francis Mahony Dereen will take part in a 640km sponsored cycle in France next month to raise funds for the Irish Hospice Movement. As part of this initiative he is organizing a table quiz in Peadar’s Bar on Friday June 22 at 9.30pm. your support for this excellent cause would be greatly appreciated. Tables of four will cost €40. We hope to see you there.


Judging in the All-Ireland pride of place competition will take place of July 13. Whether you live work or play in Durrow come out and say hello to the judges and let them know how proud you are of our town. Let’s showcase our great facilities and community spirit and our beautiful historic surroundings. Let’s get every street estate and premises clean by displaying flower boxes and picking up litter. Next work night takes place on Wednesday June 20. Meet at Mill Wheel at 7pm. In conjunction with Pride of Place and the Tidy Towns Lawlors Garden Centre are giving three trays of bedding for the price of two. This will allow every household to have beautiful flowers for the judging. Offer lasts until Sunday evening June 24. The next meeting with all clubs and organizations will be held on this Wednesday June 20 at 8pm in the courthouse. It is vital that all representatives do attend.


The AM Playgroup is holding an open morning for parents and their pre-school children who are wishing to enroll them into playschool in September 2012. The coffee morning will take place on Tuesday June 26 from 10am to 12pm in the AM Playschool, Rosewood House Knockanoran Durrow (L16401). The Harps GAA club annual race night will take place this year in O’Connell’s Bar Cullohill on Saturday July 14. Please keep this date in your diary as it is one of our major fundraising event of the year. Race cards are available from committee members. Your support would be much appreciated.


A big thank you from the Durrow Walkers who took part in the Mini Marathon on June bank Holiday to all who sponsored them for Motor Neuron Research. The total raised was €3,276. Well done to all the ladies involved. Anyone wishing to contribute to this fund can give in their donation to Susan Lawlor at Lawlor’s Gala.


There was no winner of the jackpot. Small draw winners were €30 Michael Dunphy Rath Durrow. €25 Sean Kavanagh Derry Road. €20 Vera Dunphy Ballynevin, Cullohill. Next Draw for a possible €1450 will take place on Monday June 25 in Dec’s Bar. Tickets must be in by 9.30pm on night of draw.


Durrow /Cullohill parish anglers held a trout fishing competition for the Pat Gaughan Memorial cup on Sunday. Winner was Seanie Delehunty, 2nd Tommy Coffey and 3rd Niall Donohue. Next competition will be held on Sunday June 24 for the Mick Monahan Memorial Cup. It will be a trout fishing competition and entries will be taken at Lawlor’s Garden Centre from 9.30am. Fishing from 10am with the weigh in at 6pm in the Durrow Inn.

With the high level of water on the rivers there will be no juvenile competitions until the level gets lower. For more up to date information contact the secretary Mick Walsh or Oliver Lawlor on Saturday evening regarding Sunday’s competition.


Durrow/Cullohill Parish Anglers and Woodenbridge Paddlers held a fun day on the River Erkina recently and raised €1,960 for Meals on Wheels and Durrow FAS. Both cheques were presented to Seosamh Murphy by Philip Kearney and Michael G. Phelan at a function held in the Castle Arms Hotel on Friday night. Seosamh on behalf of the two originations thanked both clubs for their great effort and the great amount of money collected. A special word of thanks to everyone involved and in particularly to Betty Walsh and David Walsh.


The Woodenbridge Paddlers will hold their annual sponsored duathlon and cycle tour in aid of the Make Believers charity group on Sunday July 8. The event will also incorporate part of Kilkenny River Festival. Proceedings will get underway from the Woodenbridge at 11.30am, when canoeists and leisure cyclists will start their respective journeys while sport cyclists will have a 12.30pm start. A fun packed event which will include fly fishing demonstration, canoeing, bouncing castles, face painting, archery, rope course, rafting, and arts and crafts will be staged at the halfway point at the broken weir Ballyragget at 2pm, where refreshments will also be served before continueing through Lisdowney to the finish in Cullahill where music and entertainment will be held in O’Connolls Bar.
