Durrow needs motorway signs

Councillors have called for proper signage for Durrow northbound on the M8.

Councillors have called for proper signage for Durrow northbound on the M8.

Councillor John Joe Fennelly put forward a notice of motion at last week’s Borris in Ossory electoral area meeting asking that the council insist the NRA or MIdlink provide proper signage for Durrow on the Cork side of the motorway. “This has been requested on many occasions by businesses in the Durrow area”, he said.

PJ Dempsey from the Roads department replied, stating that the National Roads Authority are the body with responsibility in the matter. “Laois County Council will raise the matter with the NRA and advise them of the local business concerns”, he said.

Cllr Fennelly said that it was a very serious situation for businesses in Durrow.

“Letters have gone and the NRA have done nothing over the last two years. We were told every town would have proper signage - this needs to be done”.

Cllr John Bonham remarked that the NRA have Durrow signposted on a blue sign when the motorway is near Portlaoise, and wondered why they could nnot have it closer to Durrow.
