ON Monday March 4 the Heywood Community School debating team were thrilled to be announced the winners at the Laois Inter-School debating final, against a tough Scoil Chriost Rí opposition.

It was the second year in succession that Heywood has won this prestigious event. The motion stated that “This house believes we would all pay for private schooling if we could afford it” and it provoked interesting arguments from both sides on the night. The Heywood team proposing the motion were Cormac McGowan, Aoibhinn O’Sullivan, Philip Walton and Rachel Rafter (all fifth year students).

They put in tremendous work into their debate and arguments and their persistence and dedication paid off. They had already beaten CBS Portlaoise in the first round and St Fergal’s Rathdowney in the second and finally Scoil Chriost Rí in the final. The powerful debating team were helped and directed by teachers Ms Collette O’Donnell and Ms Sinead Clifford.
