Starting from Mackey’s Bar Gathabawn at 12 noon with registration €5 (which will also enter you in raffle at finish) 11.30am. Refreshments afterwards in Dec’s Bar Durrow. Bus which leaves The Square Durrow (€5 fee) will be available throughout the day. You may also join the walk at various points along the trail including Cullahill Mountain and Ballykealy. Our new chess club takes place every Wednesday at 3.30pm. Both adults and children are welcome. We are currently taking names for a knitting club which we hope to start in mid November, more detail will follow. Our creative writing workshop resumes on Wednesday October 30 at 11am. All are welcome. The next meeting of our Adult Book Club takes place on Thursday October 24, between 6pm - 7pm. The book discussed on this date is ‘Far From the Madding Crowd’ by Thomas Hardy.


Home Instead Senior Care will hold a seminar in Abbeyleix library from 5.30pm -7.30pm on Thursday November 14. Home Instead Senior Care is the largest non medical home care provider in Ireland. They provide assistance to older people e.g. light house keeping duties, meal preparation, personal hygiene, incontinence care and Alzheimer’s and dementia care.


Congratulations go to Sharon Fennelly who graduated on Friday October 11. Sharon got three awards, fitness instructing (gym based experience), FETAC sport and recreations and Bank of Ireland student of the Year 2013. Sharon’s family want to say how proud they are of how well she did.


‘Kids & Koffee’ parent and toddler playgroup takes place every Friday 10am - 12pm in the Ballyroan Community Hall. It costs just €3 per household and all parents, childminders and pre-school children are very welcome. Fancy Dress Fundraiser

Application forms for the 2013 Laois Community Forum Awards are now available and must be in before 5pm on October 31. There are five categories in the group/clubs section while there is also an Unsung Hero Award. Application forms can be downloaded from
