The one woman show ‘Rose’ starring Fiona York is being staged on Friday October 17 at 8pm in the Arts Centre. The show recounts the remarkable life and story of survival of a Jewish woman, beginning in a Russian village, through her time in a Warsaw ghetto and her later life in the USA. Admission €10.

ROCK PRESENTATION NIGHT
A presentation night to celebrate The Rock GAA Club Junior team success in winning the All County Football League Division 5 in 2014 will take place on Saturday October 11 at 9pm in The Rock GAA Clubhouse. Following the presentations, there will be an informal buffet and music till late. Photographs of the Junior team will be taken. Family and friends welcome. A series of folklore cds covering all aspects of the social history of Laois are available to borrow from the library.

BIRDS OF PREY VISIT
Raven Haven Aviaries will visit the library on Wednesday October 15 at 10.30am with their birds of prey. All are welcome.
The library is running a competition during October. There are two categories: a colouring competition for pre-schoolers, junior infants, senior infants & first class pupils and a drawing competition for 2nd to 6th class pupils.
The theme for the drawing competition is ‘I love Reading’. Name, address, age, school, class etc. must be clearly printed on the back of the picture. All entries must be submitted on A3 (420 X 297 mm) or A4 (210 X 297 mm). Only one entry is permitted per person. Drawings can be in pencil, charcoal, pen or ink, felt tip markers, crayon, pastel, watercolours, acrylics, oils, poster paints or collage. No computer aided design may be entered.
The closing date is Tuesday October 21. Entry forms for the colouring competition are available in the library.

The Europe Direct Soapbox Competition will take place in the Dunamaise Theatre on Thursday October 9 at 7pm. The topic for this year is ‘The Internet does more harm than good’. There are two categories – u18 and over 18. Entry forms and full details are available from your local library. Make sure to enter and be in with a chance to win an ipad. Regional finalists will then compete in the all Ireland final in Dublin for the first prize of €1,000 and a trip to Brussels.
